Buckman Scores Twice, Ihrke Stops Eight Shots as Bulldog Soccer Defeats Parkside 2-1

Big Rapids, Mich. – Senior forward Haley Buckman had her first career multi-goal game and sophomore goalkeeper Korinne Ihrke made a career-high eight saves Thursday (Nov. 6) as the Ferris State University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 home victory over the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Bulldogs (7-4-6, 7-3-3 GLIAC) played their penultimate regular season game Thursday in a battle between top four teams in the GLIAC. Entering Thursday's game, the Bulldogs were in fourth place with 21 points while Parkside was tied with Saginaw Valley for second with 25 points. With the win, FSU pulled within one point of the Rangers with one game remaining on each team's schedule.

Buckman put the Bulldogs up 1-0 with a penalty shot goal at 22:09. It was FSU's first penalty shot of the season. Grace Sampson drew a foul in the box and Buckman converted the ensuing kick for her fourth goal this year. She fired a shot to the right post, beating UWP goalkeeper Tristen Cross for the goal. 

Ihrke made four saves in the first half, helping the Bulldogs to a 1-0 advantage at the break. The Rangers had four corner kicks and 10 total shot attempts in the first half compared to one corner and two shot attempts for the Bulldogs.

UWP scored 45 seconds into the second half on a goal from Ava Rizzitano. Emily Giese assisted as the Rangers tied the game 1-1.

Buckman gave FSU a 2-1 lead at 68:57 with her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Katherine Welch took a shot that Cross saved, but Buckman was there in the box for the rebound and fired a shot into the net. It was her first career game with two goals, and Welch collected her third assist of the year. 

Ihrke went on to make four more saves, including three in the final six minutes. She held on for her sixth victory of the season as the Bulldogs closed out a 2-1 win.

For the game, FSU had four shots on goal, four corner kicks, eight shot attempts and 11 fouls. The Rangers had nine shots on goal, eight corner kicks, 18 total shot attempts and 12 fouls.

Individually, Buckman led the team with two shots on goal. Sampson and Welch each had one. Bella Vallone, Natalia Leavens, Lauren McCaul, Ella Wolf, Annie Hartley and Isabella Baron each played 90 minutes. 

Cross finished with two saves for the Rangers in her sixth loss of the year and Rizzitano had a game-high four shots on goal.

The Bulldogs will conclude the regular season Saturday (Nov. 8) with a home match against Roosevelt. Game time is schedule for 1 p.m. (ET) from the Bulldog Soccer Field with live coverage provided on FloCollege.
