Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker In Double Overtime To Open Season
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime setback to Indianapolis in their 2012 season opener on Friday (Aug. 31) afternoon at the Grand Valley State Kickoff Tournament in Allendale.
The Greyhounds' Kaitlyn Braunig notched a pair of goals and her second came at the 104:13 mark of the contest off an assist from Shelby Spinelli in game-winning extra session fashion.
After a scoreless first half, Ferris State jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Freshman forward Casey Shauman notched her first collegiate goal at 51:43 for the first score of the contest on a cross from the right side of the box to the left post. The shot was assisted by another freshman in defender Ashley Bradstreet.
FSU added to its advantage only two minutes later as the two rookies reversed roles when Bradstreet connected on a shot from the top of the box off a feed from Shauman at 53:49 of the second frame.
Indianapolis fought back, though, and scored twice late in the game to force overtime. The first Greyhounds' goal came at 73:13 from Chaunell Abrams off a corner kick. Then, at 81:20, Braunig posted her first goal of the game off a Spinelli assist.
The Bulldogs held a slim 17-16 edge in total shots for the contest and also received seven corner kick tries to only two for the Greyhounds.
Ferris State junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum played the entire 104:13 in net and made four saves for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Indianapolis' Megan Fee stopped five FSU scoring chances in earning the victory.
Junior midfielder Hillary Braun recorded a team-high four shots for the Bulldogs as did senior Logan DeClercq. All three of Shauman's shots came on goal. Spinelli led the Greyhounds with five total attempts with four on goal.
Ferris State will play a second contest in the Grand Valley State Kickoff Tournament on Sunday (Sept. 2) as the Bulldogs take on nationally third-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) at 11 a.m. (ET) in Allendale.
