The Ferris State University women's soccer team continues to solidify its defensive unit for the 2011 season as the Bulldogs have landed Mississippi State transfer Riley Wood (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) as announced by FSU women's soccer head coach Matt Kellogg.
Wood, a 5-7 midfielder-defender, was redshirted this past 2010 season at Mississippi State and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
"Riley will be a great addition to our team," said Kellogg, who will begin his second season with the Bulldogs this fall. "She is coming in with a year of college soccer under her belt and will be able to step in right away and build on last season's success. I have known Riley for a while now and know that she is a great player and a great person.
"She (Riley) is the type of person we are recruiting at Ferris State, competitive on and off the field and a solid teammate," added Kellogg.
A two-time all-state selection at Walled Lake (Mich.) Northern High School, Wood claimed all-region, all-conference, and all-district team recognition all four years under head coach Drew Drummond.
As a senior in 2009, she served as a captain and helped guide the Knights to both a district and city championship title. Wood tallied eight goals and nine assists for 25 points in her 2008 junior campaign en route to earning all-state, all-district, and team Most Valuable Player Award accolades. She was the recipient of the 2007 squad's Best Offensive Player Award following her sophomore year as a result of notching 28 points via nine goals and 10 assists as the Knights were crowned city champions. As a freshman, Wood racked up 22 points by scoring six goals and adding 10 assists for the 2006 season while garnering the squad's Sparkplug Award.
Wood played club soccer for Vardar 92 and helped lead the team to six Michigan State Cup Championships while registering a 261-52-42 overall record during her career. She played an integral role in guiding the 2009 squad to the semifinals of the Region II Tournament after directing the 2008 Vardar team to the Region II Tournament Finals. A six-year Michigan Olympic Development Pool (ODP) team member, Wood played for both the 2007 and 2008 ODP teams which made national championship and national championship semifinal appearances, respectively.
The daughter of Jim and Vicki Wood of White Lake, Mich., Wood joins Samantha Kay (Portage/Northern), Leanne Boehm (Macomb/Henry Ford II), Taylor DiCicco (Washington Township/Eisenhower), Fendi Foster (Sterling Heights/Stevenson), Stephanie Garland (Macomb/L'Anse Creuse North), Jenna Ruimveld (Vicksburg), Sara Sikorski (Rochester Hills/Rochester), and Jessica Wineke (Rochester Hills/Adams) as incoming newcomers to the 2011 team.
Ferris State begins the 2011 campaign on Tuesday, Aug. 23 with a non-conference match against Davenport at Grand Rapids, Mich. FSU opens the home portion of its 2011 schedule Friday, Sept. 9 as Saginaw Valley State visits Big Rapids, Mich., in what represents the Bulldogs' first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest for this upcoming season.
