FSU Visits Ashland In GLIAC Quarterfinals
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team has officially received its second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament berth and will hit the road for a quarterfinal-round match on Tuesday (Nov. 1).
The Bulldogs are seeded sixth among the six qualifying teams and will visit Ashland for a 2 p.m. (ET) contest on Tuesday in Ashland, Ohio. The other quarterfinal-round match pits fourth-seeded Northern Michigan hosting fifth-seeded Tiffin on Tuesday, also at 2 p.m.
Defending national champion Grand Valley State received the tournament's top seed and will receive a first-round bye after winning the league's North Division along with GLIAC South Division Champion Ohio Dominican, which is seeded second in the draw.
The winners of Tuesday's quarterfinals will advance to the GLIAC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4, in Allendale, Mich. The tournament title game is set for Sunday, Nov. 6, in Allendale.
Ohio Dominican will play the winner of the Ashland/Ferris State match on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the GVSU Soccer Field. Grand Valley State will then play the winner of the Northern Michigan/Tiffin tilt later that evening at 7 p.m. The women's tournament final will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Ferris State enters the tournament with a 7-8-3 overall record this season and placed third in the division with a 7-5-3 conference mark. Meanwhile, Ashland holds a 8-7-3 overall ledger and came in second in the South Division at 7-4-3 in conference action.
Earlier this season (9/23), the Bulldogs recorded a 3-0 victory over the Eagles in Ashland, Ohio.
Ferris State has compiled a current 1-3 all-time record (.250) in GLIAC Tournament matches. The Bulldogs made their initial conference tourney appearance in 2007 (10/30/07) with a 3-2 quarterfinal-round loss at Saginaw Valley State. FSU then registered a 2-0 home decision over Northern Michigan in the 2008 quarterfinals (11/4/08) before suffering a 3-0 semifinal-round setback at Grand Valley State (11/7/08). Last season, the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 contest in the quarterfinals against Northern Michigan in Marquette (11/2/10).
The Bulldogs wrapped up conference regular-season play with a narrow 1-0 home loss to rival and unbeaten Grand Valley State this past Saturday (Oct. 29) in Big Rapids.
