Ferris State Women's Soccer Notes – Matches 16-17

*The Opening Kick: The Ferris State University women's soccer team will return home this weekend (Oct. 21-23) after spending the past eight matches on the road. The Bulldogs will take on two Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) teams. On Friday (Oct. 21), the Bulldogs will face the Findlay Oilers at 4 p.m. (ET). Sunday's (Oct. 23) contest will be against the Tiffin Dragons beginning at 12 p.m. (ET).
*2011 Record: Ferris State is currently 6-7-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the GLIAC's North Division to date this season.
*The Coach: Ferris State - Matt Kellogg (Butler, 2000), 2nd season , 13-16-5 (.456). Kellogg serves as the fourth head coach in FSU women's soccer history. Under the direction of Kellogg, the Bulldogs held a 7-9-3 overall record and a 7-6-2 record in GLIAC match play last year. Prior to coaching at Ferris State, Kellogg spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Morehead (Ky.) State and quickly made an impact in his initial campaign as the Eagles captured the program's first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular-season championship.
*2011 GLIAC Coaches Poll: Ferris State was chosen to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Women's Soccer Poll, which was released Aug. 24 by the league office. The Bulldogs earned 16 points in their third place North Division finish. Grand Valley State finished first in the poll with 25 points. Tiffin was tabbed for the first place honor in the South Division. The league's 11 head coaches participated in the balloting, but weren't allowed to vote for their own team.
*Bulldog Bytes: Senior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) is currently ranked fourth among all-time scoring leaders with 74 points coming from 33 goals and eight assists thus far in her Bulldog career … Borgman currently leads the Bulldogs in goals with eight of the team's 17 goals on the season … Sophomore Goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) has played in 12 Bulldog outings and currently sports a 1.16 goals against average and a .826 save percentage.
*Returning Firepower: Ferris State returns 13 letterwinners from a season ago. The Bulldogs welcome back senior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa), who compiled a squad best 23 points on 10 goals and three assists in the 2010 season. Senior defender Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central) also returns with an All-GLIAC Second-Team selection in 2010.
*Talented Forward: Senior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) currently ranks second all-time in career game-winning goals at Ferris State. Borgman has currently tallied eight goals thus far in the 2011 season, which is more than half the total number of goals she scored in the 2010 season.
*2010 Season: Ferris State concluded the 2010 season with 7-9-3 overall record and 7-6-2 GLIAC record.
*FSU's 13th Season: The 2011 campaign represents Ferris State's 13th season of women's soccer. The Bulldogs own an all time mark of 92-119-18 (.441) to date since the program's inception in 1999. The 2003 (11-5-1) and 2005 (11-7-0) seasons hold the program's record for most victories in a single campaign.
*Last Home Match: The Bulldogs will play their final regular-season match against rival Grand Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Big Rapids. Match time is set for 12 p.m. (ET). The GLIAC Tournament opens on Nov. 1 with sites and pairings to be announced.
The Findlay Oilers currently hold an overall record of 6-6-1 and a GLIAC record of 5-4-1 to date this year. Last weekend (Oct. 16), UF dropped a contest to Ohio Dominican with a score of 1-0. In the 2010 season, the Bulldogs lost 3-1 on Findlay's home turf. The 2011 season is the 22nd for head coach Andy Smyth at the helm of the women's soccer program.
The Dragons have a current overall record of 7-5-2 and a 4-4-1 GLIACmark. Tiffin played last Sunday (Oct. 16) and recorded a 1-0 victory against Saginaw Valley State. On Tuesday, (Oct. 18) the Dragons shut out Northwood 4-0. Head coach Paula Fantini is in her second season at the helm. The Bulldogs dropped their 2010 contest against the Dragons with a final score of 2-1 in overtime.
