For the second year in a row, the Ferris State University women's soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Women's Soccer Poll as announced this Friday (Aug. 27) by the conference office.

Ferris State is one of six schools who will play in the GLIAC's North Division this upcoming 2010 campaign.

With a new divisional format this 2010 season, Ferris State registered nine points in the GLIAC North Division in voting conducted by the conference coaches.  Grand Valley State, the 2009 national champion and five-time defending conference champions, received five first-place votes and earned 25 points to claim the top spot in the division.  Saginaw Valley State picked up the other lone first-place vote while recording 21 points.  Northern Michigan and Northwood tied for third place with 15 points each.  Michigan Tech, which will begin its inaugural season this fall, totaled a sixth-place five points.

Tiffin was tabbed as the favorite in the South Division as the Dragons had three-first place votes to go with 14 points.  Findlay and conference newcomer Ohio Dominican picked up a first-place nod apiece.  Lake Erie, which will be making its GLIAC debut this upcoming season, rounded out the five South Division teams with five points.

The league's 11 head coaches participated in the balloting, but weren't allowed to vote for their team.

A season ago, the Bulldogs accumulated 29 points for fifth place in the eight-team conference poll.

Ferris State, under the direction of first-year head coach Matt Kellogg, returns nine starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2009 squad which went 3-13-2 overall with a seventh-place 3-10-1 conference mark.  The Bulldogs welcome back six of their top seven points leaders from last fall and return 82 percent of the team's total goal-scoring production from 2009.

FSU begins its 12th season of intercollegiate play and an 18-match regular season schedule next Friday, Sept. 3, hosting Minnesota State at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.  The non-league outing will begin at 4 p.m. (EDT).  The Bulldogs then entertain Winona (Minn.) State next Sunday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. (EDT) before wrapping up its season-opening three-match homestand against Grand Valley State on Wednesday, Sept. 8, versus Grand Valley State.  A 4 p.m. (EDT) start time is scheduled for the conference-opening tilt.
