2009 GLIAC Women's Soccer Poll Lists FSU Fifth
The Ferris State Bulldogs have received a fifth-place ranking in the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll as released by the conference office this Monday (Aug. 24).
The Bulldogs received 29 points in the eight-team conference poll, which were 10 more than sixth-place Findlay ( 19 pts.) and four less than fourth-place Northern Michigan (33 pts.). Grand Valley State, the defending GLIAC Champions, totaled a maximum 49 points total and earned seven of the eight first-place votes. Tiffin, who picked up the lone remaining first-place votes, accumulated 37 points. Saginaw Valley State chalked up 35 points to place third in the preseason poll. The conference's eight head coaches participated in the balloting, but weren't allowed to vote for their own team. The first-place team on each ballot received seven points while the second-place team earned six points, etc.
A season ago, Ferris State garnered a seventh-place 19 points in the preseason balloting.
The 2009 GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament will commence Nov. 3 with quarterfinal-round action at campus sites. The semifinals and final for the conference tournament is slated for Nov. 6 and 8 on the campus of the tourney's number one seed.
Ferris State, under fourth-year head coach Neathan Gibson, returns six starters and 14 letterwinners from a 2008 squad which posted a 9-9-1 overall record with a fourth-place 7-6-1 conference mark. The Bulldogs welcome back nine of their top 12 points leaders from last fall and return 39 percent of the team's total goal-scoring output from 2008.
FSU opens its 11th season of intercollegiate play and an 18-match regular season schedule this Friday, Aug. 28, visiting Minnesota State in a non-conference match at Mankato, Minn. The Bulldogs' 2009 home opener will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, versus Lewis at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The non-league outing is slated for a 2:30 p.m. (EDT) start time.
