Senior Stevie Salow (Saginaw/Heritage) and junior Christy Palmer (DeWitt) of the Ferris State University women's soccer team have been named as captains for the 2009 season in an announcement made by fourth-year head coach Neathan Gibson.
Salow, who plays at the defender position, finished tied for eighth among the 2008 team leaders in points with three total (all assists) in 17 matches. Salow received a starting assignment in 14 contests a season ago. She received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic Team accolades for the second year in a row and was also a repeat recipient of the FSU Dean's Academic Award following last fall's campaign.
In 54 career outings, Salow has accumulated 10 points on three goals with four assists to go with 11 shots on goal. She also has notched a 0-1-0 mark in net as a goalkeeper while producing a 3.55 goals-against average (four goals allowed) and a .600 save percentage (six saves) in 101:22 minutes of action. Salow enters the 2009 campaign presently ranking eighth on Ferris State's career leaders list with 2,792 total minutes played.
A midfielder, Palmer didn't register a point as a starter in 10 of 15 matches played in a season ago. The two-time (2006 and 2007) GLIAC All-Academic Team member has posted a point (an assist) in 28 career appearances while totaling eight shots on net during that span.
Ferris State opens its 2009 season this weekend (Aug. 28 and 30) with a pair of non-conference matches in the state of Minnesota. The Bulldogs face nationally 15th-ranked Minnesota State this Friday (Aug. 28) in their season opener at Mankato, Minn., starting at 5 p.m. (EDT). FSU then concludes the weekend's action this Sunday (Aug. 30), visiting Winona (Minn.) State in a 1 p.m. (EDT) encounter.
