Late Rally Falls Short For Ferris State In Setback To McKendree

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Ferris State University men's basketball squad rallied back late, but fell short in a 75-70 defeat to McKendree (Ill.) on Friday (Dec. 19) night inside Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs' strong free-throw shooting at 86.7% was not enough to overcome McKendree's 17-point lead established in the first half.

The game began with Ferris State taking an early lead on a 3-pointer by Joey Cabana at 19:15, assisted by Brandon Claerbaut. Although the Bulldogs managed to tie the score multiple times, McKendree's offensive efforts, particularly a series of successful layups and free throws, allowed them to regain control. The Bulldogs' attempts to close the gap included a 3-pointer by Mykel Bingham at 4:17 and a late 3-pointer by Cabana at 0:44. However, McKendree maintained their lead, ending the first half ahead, 45–32.

Ferris State made an impactful start to the second half with Bingham converting a jumper and free throw in the first 11 seconds. Despite McKendree's early pressure, including a 3-pointer by Noah Franklin and a dunk by Moses Wilson, the Bulldogs responded with Bingham's 3-pointer at 18:08, assisted by Cabana. The home team continued to fight back with contributions from Claerbaut, who made a 3-pointer at 12:16, and Bryce Moore, who added a layup at 11:37.

FSU maintained the momentum with strong defensive plays, including Owen Hardy's block at 9:34 and a crucial defensive rebound in the final minute. Despite the Bulldogs' efforts to close the gap, McKendree held onto their lead, and the half concluded with the Bulldogs scoring 38 points to McKendree's 30.

Bingham scored 19 points, converting 7 of 11 field goals and 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Hardy recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while also adding three blocks. Cabana added 13 points and distributed four assists. Chang Hoth finished with 13 points, successfully converting all seven of his free throw attempts and collecting two steals.

Moses Wilson led the team with 18 points, converting 7 of 10 field goals, and added seven rebounds. Cha'Vez Woods contributed 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting and recorded two steals. Andrew Moore was dominant on the boards with 11 rebounds while scoring 17 points, including two 3-pointers. Franklin added nine points and one block, despite committing five turnovers.

The Bulldogs will return to action at home on Dec. 30 against Grace Christian at Jim Wink Arena.
