*The Opening Serve: The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will open the 2012 season and its 40th year of intercollegiate competition this weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 1), hosting the Ferris State Invitational. Tournament play will take place on courts in the Ewigleben Sports Arena and Jim Wink Arena on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State's opposition features Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.), Mercyhurst (Pa.), West Virginia State and Clarion (Pa.) in the two-day event.

*Ticket Information: Tickets for the 2012 Ferris State Invitational will be available at the door. Tickets are $3 for faculty, students and K-12 or $10 for adults per day. A $15 tournament pass including both days of action is available. Free admission for FSU Students with ID and children under the age of five. The Division II for 2 pass applies for this event. *The 40th Season: The 2011 campaign represents Ferris State's 40th season of women's volleyball. The Bulldogs own an all-time record of 835-465 (.642). Since the program's inception in 1973, the Bulldogs have won 10 GLIAC titles, qualified 16 times for the NCAA-II Tournament and registered 32 winning seasons.

*2012 Record: Ferris State is currently 0-0 overall and 0-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division to date.

*The Coaches: FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm (Alma, 1990), is embarking on her 17th year at Ferris State. Brandel-Wilhelm holds a career record of 333-164 (.670). Brandel-Wilhelm enters the 2012 campaign as Ferris State's all-time winningest coach. She became the program's fifth head coach in June 1996.

*Ferris State Invitational: The 2012 Ferris State Invitational will be held this weekend (Agu. 31-Sept. 1) on two courts. Comprising the nine-team tournament besides Ferris State are Alderson-Broaddus, Clarion, Glenville State (W.Va.), Mercyhurst, Minnesota-Crookston, Northern Michigan, Northwood and West Virginia State. Ferris State will take on Alderson-Broaddus and Mercyhurst in this Friday's (Aug. 31) action at 4 p.m. (EDT) and 7 p.m. (EDT), respectively. The Bulldogs will conclude the tournament on Saturday (Sept. 1) with a pair of matches versus West Virginia State and Clarion at 1 p.m. (EDT) and 5 p.m. (EDT), respectively.

*This Week's Opposition:

Alderson-Broaddus: Ferris State owns a 3-0 all-time series' edge over the Battlers, including a 1-0 record against Alderson-Broaddus in Big Rapids.  The two teams last met in 2003 with the Bulldogs recording a 3-0 sweep at the Grand Valley State Days Inn Classic in Allendale.  AB posted a 20-16 overall mark in 2011 and was picked second in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Preseason Poll.  Seven upperclassmen return for head coach Carrie Bodkins.

Mercyhurst: The Bulldogs hold a commanding 15-1 all-time edge over their former GLIAC counterparts. FSU is 8-0 all-time against the Lakers in Big Rapids, including a 3-0 shutout in the last matchup between the two teams in 2010.  Mercyhurst was chosen seventh in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Poll.  Head coach Ryan Patton's squad was 14-18 overall last season and returns seven seniors.

West Virginia State: The Bulldogs are 5-0 all-time versus West Virginia State and all five meetings have taken place in Big Rapids.  FSU topped the Yellow Jackets by a 3-1 count in the 2009 Ferris State Invitational.  West Virginia State was picked eighth in the WVIAC Preseason Poll following a 12-13 overall mark a year ago under head coach Shannon Gerencir.

Clarion (Pa.): FSU and Clarion will meet on Saturday for the first-time ever in volleyball competition.  The Golden Eagles are guided by sixth-year head coach Jennifer Mills.  She directed the program to a 19-13 overall mark and a 14-5 PSAC slate last season as the squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year.  They must replace six key players from a year ago.

*2012 GLIAC Volleyball Preseason Poll: Ferris State was selected first in the 2012 GLIAC Preseason North Division Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs captured 10 first-place votes and 211 total points as the favorite in the 16-team league.  FSU, which won the GLIAC North Division a year ago, was tabbed to finish ahead of defending conference tournament champion Hillsdale.  The Chargers came in second with 193 points and three first-place votes.

*2012 FSU Roster: Ferris State's 2012 active roster includes six seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen. Seven of the 18 players are middle hitters, seven are outside hitters and the four others fill the squad's setter, defensive specialist and libero roles.  All but two members of the team are from Michigan.

*Ewigleben Sports Arena: The Bulldogs have compiled a 307-82 (.789) record to date in 31 seasons of competition at the Ewigleben Sports Arena since moving from the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Building in 1981. Ferris, which has accumulated six undefeated home seasons in the facility, produced a 15-1 home ledger in 2011. Overall, Ferris is 160-42 (.792) in home matches under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

*2011 Record: The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division Championship while also reaching the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals in 2011 with a 27-4 overall record.  Ferris State finished as league co-champions after posting an 18-1 conference mark under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm. The Bulldogs appeared in their 14th straight GLIAC Tournament a season ago.

*2011 Ferris State Invitational Recap: The Bulldogs posted a perfect 4-0 record at the 2011 Ferris State Invitational (Sept. 2-3). Ferris State shut out Drury (Mo.) by a 3-0 count and topped Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 on the opening day of the event before recording identical 3-0 triumphs over Southern Indiana and California (Pa.) in day two action.

*Ferris State Invitational History: FSU has experienced recent success in the Ferris State Invitational. From 1998-2001, the Bulldogs opened each of their four seasons with a 4-0 record after winning consecutive matches in the home event. Ferris State went 3-1 in the 2006, 2008 and 2010 tournaments and produced a 4-0 ledger in four other seasons (2004, 2005, 2007, 2011).

*All-Conference Returners: Ferris State has three All-GLIAC performers from last season's squad returning. Senior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) and senior middle hitter Anne Sutton were chosen as first team All-GLIAC picks a year ago while sophomore middle hitter Courtney Rehm earned second team status and was the GLIAC's Freshman of the Year.  Meanwhile, senior outside hitter Aly Brecht wan an honorable mention choice a year ago.

The publication features such information as 2012 player rosters, season outlook, player biographies, coaching staff information, 2011 season statistics, career and season statistical records, series records, game records, etc.
