Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team concluded their 2011 regular season with a 3-1 victory against the Lake Superior State Lakers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
With the victory, the Bulldogs finished off the 2011 regular-season with a 24-2 record and an 18-1 GLIAC mark en route to claiming the 2011 GLIAC regular-season championship and the top overall seed for the conference postseason tournament. The Lakers fell to an 8-18 overall record and 5-13 in conference action.
Three Bulldogs registered double-digit kills in the four-set match. Senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) had a match-high with 22 kills. Junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) tallied 16 kills with an attack percentage of .333 on the day. Freshman middle hitter Courtney Rehm (Portage) notched 13 kills.
Four Ferris State student-athletes had double-digit digs including Huntey, junior outside hitter Aly Brecht (Alma), junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) and senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville), who led the pack with 28 on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs totaled six blocks with Sutton registering three block solos and one block assist. Lake Superior State blocked nine of Ferris State's attack attempts.
The nationally 12th-ranked Bulldog team has secured a home match for the quarterfinal-round of the GLIAC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 10, and the Bulldogs will own the top seed for the tournament. Official pairings will be announced on Sunday evening after regular-season play has concluded.
