FSU Volleyball Second In Midwest Region
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team has climbed to second in the latest NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Rankings announced on Thursday (Nov. 3).
The Bulldogs are listed second in the region behind Hillsdale and moved up from third in the previous week's rankings. The regional listing helps determine the field for the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships, which will be held between Nov. 17-20 at a campus site to be determined.
Overall, 64 teams will make up the NCAA Division II Tournament field with eight teams from each of Division II's eight regions.
The Midwest Region consists of both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The top team in the region at the end of the year will likely host the Midwest Regional.
Behind Hillsdale and FSU, the regional rankings feature Indianapolis (#3), Northern Kentucky (#4), Lewis (#5), Southern Indiana (#6), Saginaw Valley State (#7), Missouri S&T (#8), Missouri-St. Louis (#9) and Northern Michigan (#10) as this week's listing includes six GLVC schools and four GLIAC teams.
FSU officially captured the 2011 GLIAC North Division Championship with Wednesday (Nov. 2) night's 3-0 league road victory at Saginaw Valley State. This week's regional rankings do not reflect the victory over SVSU.
The divisional crown is FSU's first since the conference was split into two divisions for volleyball in 1996 and represents the program's first league regular-season title since winning the conference in 1990.
Ferris State is currently ranked 12th nationally under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm and owns a 22-2 overall record along with a 16-1 league mark. The 16 conference wins to date matches the 1990 squad for most GLIAC wins in school history.
Ferris State wraps up regular-season play this weekend as the Bulldogs visit Northwood on Friday (Nov. 4) for a 7 p.m. (ET) league encounter in Midland followed by a trip to Lake Superior State on Saturday (Nov. 5) with match time set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
The Bulldogs have secured a home match for the quarterfinal-round of the GLIAC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 10, and currently are tied for first along with Hillsdale in the overall standings as both hold 16-1 league marks. FSU presently holds the tiebreaker edge over the Chargers heading into the final two regular-season matches and could potentially be crowned as the league's overall champions and host the tournament semifinals and finals on Nov. 12-13.
The GLIAC Tournament pairings will be announced this weekend after regular-season play has concluded.
