Big Rapids, Mich. – Ferris State University senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) was awarded for her fantastic play over the weekend as she was tabbed the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division "Player of the Week" Award recipient for the 2011 season.
The honor was announced yesterday (Sept. 7) by the league office. The weekly award is selected by the league office staff and sponsored by Hit Trophy.
Huntey paced the Bulldogs to a perfect 4-0 mark in FSU's annual home invitational this past weekend (Sept. 2-3) at Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. A team captain, Huntey tallied a team-high 53 kills and added 25 digs in the four-match swing.
She totaled 10 kills or more in all four encounters and also netted seven service aces on the weekend. Huntey averaged 4.08 kills and 1.92 digs per set for the week with seven total blocks.
This is the first time Huntey has received the GLIAC weekly honor in her collegiate career.
This weekend, Ferris State will begin GLIAC play. The Bulldogs will travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech in Houghton on Friday (Sept. 9) evening at 7 p.m. (EDT) followed by a trip to Marquette face Northern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 2 p.m. (EDT).
