*The Opening Serve: The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will open the 2011 season and 39th year of intercollegiate competition this weekend (Sept. 2-3), hosting the Ferris State Invitational. Tournament play will take place on courts in the Ewigleben Sports Arena and Jim Wink Arena on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State's opposition features California (Pa.), Drury, Southern Indiana, and Wisconsin-Parkside in the two-day event.

*Ticket Information: Tickets for the 2011 Ferris State Invitational will be available at the door. Tickets are $3 for faculty, students and K-12, $10 for adults per day. A $15 tournament pass including both days of action is available. Free admission for FSU Students with ID and children under the age of five. The Division II for 2 pass applies for this event. *The 39th Season: The 2011 campaign represents Ferris State's 39th season of women's volleyball. The Bulldogs own an all-time record of 808-461 (.637). Since the program's inception in 1973, the Bulldogs have won nine GLIAC titles, qualified 15 times for the NCAA-II Tournament and registered 31 winning seasons.

*2011 Record: Ferris State is currently 0-0 overall and 0-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division to date.

*The Coaches: FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm (Alma, 1990), is embarking on her 16th year at Ferris State. Brandel-Wilhelm holds a career record of 306-160 (.657). Brandel-Wilhelm enters the 2011 campaign just 24 victories away from a tie for Ferris State's all-time winningest coach. She became the program's fifth head coach in June 1996.

*Ferris State Invitational: The 2011 Ferris State Invitational will be held this weekend (Sept. 2-3) on two courts. Comprising the eight-team tournament besides Ferris State are California (Pa.), Drury, Lake Superior State, Southern Indiana, Upper Iowa, Urbana and Wisconsin-Parkside. Ferris State will take on Drury and Wisconsin-Parkside in this Friday's (Sept. 2) action at 3 p.m. (EDT) and 6 p.m. (EDT), respectively. The Bulldogs will conclude the tournament on Saturday (Sept. 3) with a pair of matches versus Southern Indiana and California (Pa.) at 12 p.m. (EDT) and 5 p.m. (EDT), respectively.

*This Week's Opposition:

Drury: Ferris State has a 1-0 lead over the Panthers in the all-time series record as a result of posting a 3-2 decision in 2008. The Panthers held a 22-13 overall record a season ago. The 2010 season marked the most wins the Panthers have achieved since becoming a NCAA-II member. This will be the third season as Drury's head coach for Ashleigh Fitzgerald. The 2010 season culminated in a second straight berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament's (GLVC) eight-team, post-season field.

Wisconsin-Parkside: The Bulldogs have a 13-1 series edge over the Rangers. The most recent contest was in the 2010 season culminating in a 3-2 loss to the Bulldogs. Wisconsin-Parkside held an overall record of 19-11 last season and 7-7 in GLVC play. The 2011 season will mark the inaugural season for head coach Christine Paciero. 

Southern Indiana: Ferris State has a 7-3 all-time series advantage over Southern Indiana. The Bulldogs won 3-0 in the last match during the 2009 season. The Screaming Eagles finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 18-12, and 10-4 in GLVC play. During the 2010 season, head coach Leah Mercer led the Screaming Eagles to the NCAA tournament for the third time in the program's history.

California (Pa.): FSU will meet for the fifth time in a series which is tied at 2-2. The Vulcans prevailed in the previous match, 3-1, which took place in the 2009 season. The Vulcans concluded the 2010 season with a 23-13 overall record and 15-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. The 2011 season will be the first as head coach for Peter Letourneau.

*2011 GLIAC Volleyball Preseason Poll: Ferris State was selected third in the 2011 GLIAC Preseason North Division Coaches Poll. This season, Hillsdale was picked as the top team in the South Division and Northern Michigan as the first-place team in the North Division. Falling two points behind Northern Michigan was second-place Grand Valley State.

*2011 Team Captains: Serving as the 2011 FSU team captains are senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville), senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Marysville/Morley-Stanwood), junior setter Samantha Fordyce (Dewitt) and junior outside hitter Aly Brecht (Alma). Fordyce and Tobiczyk both served as captains in the 2010 season.

*2011 FSU Roster: Ferris State's 2011 active roster includes three seniors, six juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. Six of the 15 players are middle hitters, five are outside hitters and the four others fill the squad's setter, defensive specialist and libero roles.  All but one member of the team is from Michigan.

*Ewigleben Sports Arena: The Bulldogs have compiled a 292-81 (.783) record to date in 30 seasons of competition at the Ewigleben Sports Arena since moving from the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Building in 1981. Ferris, which has accumulated six undefeated home seasons in the facility, produced a 10-5 home ledger in 2010. Overall, Ferris is 145-41 (.779) in home matches under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

*2010 Record: Ferris State concluded the 2010 season with a 18-10 overall record and a 13-6 record in GLIAC play. The Bulldogs appeared in their 13th straight GLIAC Tournament a season ago. Ferris State finished the regular season in fourth-place among the North Division.

*2010 Ferris State Invitational Recap: The Bulldogs posted a 3-2 record at the 2010 Ferris State Invitational (Sept. 3-4). Ferris State shut out both Lock Haven and Glenville State in 3-0 decisions on the first day of tournament play. On the concluding day of the tournament the Bulldogs suffered a 3-1 loss to Minnesota State before winning 3-1 over Mercyhurst.

*Ferris State Invitational History: FSU has experienced recent success in the Ferris State Invitational. From 1998-2001, the Bulldogs opened each of their four seasons with a 4-0 record after winning consecutive matches in the home event. Ferris State went 3-1 in the 2006 and 2010 tournaments and produced a 4-0 ledger in three seasons (2004, 2005, and 2006).

*All-Conference Returners: Ferris State has three All-GLIAC performers from last season's squad returning. Senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) and senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) both received second team recognition. Junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) was named on the honorable mention team.
