Samantha Fordyce Earns GLIAC Volleyball Weekly Honor
Sophomore setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) of the 2010 Ferris State University women's volleyball team has earned this week's (Sept. 20) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week honors as a result of helping the Bulldogs compile a 2-1 record in this past week's conference divisional match play. The announcement was made this Monday (Sept. 20) by the GLIAC Office.
Fordyce generated 122 total assists for an 11.0 average per set in Ferris State's three road matches this past week. She posted match highs in assists with 45 total at Grand Valley State (Sept. 15), 33 at Northwood (Sept. 18), and 44 helpers at Lake Superior State (Sept. 19). She also recorded a season match-high .857 hitting percentage at Grand Valley State with a season-high six kills in seven attempts. Fordyce, one of four 2010 team captains, chalked up a personal season match-best nine digs apiece in encounters versus Grand Valley State and Lake Superior State.
A 2009 FSU Most Improved Player Award co-recipient, Fordyce has presently totaled a squad-most 290 assists for a 9.35 average per set in nine contests this fall. She is averaging 0.35 service aces per set (11 total) while tallying 54 digs (1.74 average a set) and four total blocks (three blocks solos) to date for the 2010 campaign. Fordyce has racked up 30 or more assists in match on six occasions this season.
For her career, Fordyce has amassed 1,533 assists for a 10.15 average per set while serving up 38 total aces and recording a 0.25 average in 40 matches. She has accumulated at least 40 assists in a match 17 times, which includes a career match-high 63 assists against Grand Valley State (Sept. 15) last season. The 5-11 Fordyce has compiled 253 digs (1.68 average per set) and produced 49 total blocks (four block solos and 45 blocks assists) in 151 career sets. She also has hammered 61 kills (0.40 average) while hitting for a .198 percentage to date.
Fordyce's 1,533 career assists presently ranks 12th among the program's all-time leaders and needs 19 helpers to move into an 11th-place tie with Wendy McCann (1984-87; 1,552 career assists) on the career charts.
Ferris State, which is currently 6-3 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC North Division this season, returns to the court this Friday (Sept. 24) versus the Hillsdale Chargers in a 7 p.m. (EDT) conference tilt at Hillsdale, Mich. The contest is the first of three consecutive league road matches this weekend for Ferris State, who will also play this Saturday (Sept. 25) at Wayne State and Sunday (Sept. 26) against Findlay.
