The Ferris State University women's volleyball team continued to maintain its high level of success in season openers as the Bulldogs posted a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-21, 25-10) over Lock Haven (Pa.) this Friday (Sept. 3) afternoon in the 2010 Ferris State Invitational at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
As a result of the triumph, Ferris State's overall record remains perfect at 1-0 in the young 2010 season. The Bulldogs have now won 19 of their last 21 season-opening matches to date with the non-conference decision.
Senior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) led the way for Ferris State with a match-high 11 kills on 13 attempts for an impressive .846 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) hammered eight kills while senior middle hitter Danielle Hamilton (Galesburg/Galesburg-Augusta) tallied a career match-best seven kills on nine attack opportunities for a .667 success rate. FSU concluded the three-set contest hitting .329 while Lock Haven recorded a .218 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) directed the FSU offense with a match-leading 26 assists while her five service aces also paced the Bulldogs in that statistical category.
Junior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) also turned in a productive performance with a squad-high five digs and four service aces.
For the match, Ferris State chalked up 37 kills to Lock Haven's 23 match total. The Bulldogs also finished the contest with 15 service aces compared to the Lady Eagles' three. FSU controlled play up front as well with four total team blocks while LHU generated two team rejections.
With the season-opening triumph, Ferris improved to 32-6 all-time in such encounters and are now 14-1 in season openers under current head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
The Bulldogs continue action in the Ferris State Invitational this Friday (Sept. 3) versus Glenville State (W.Va.) in a 6 p.m. (EDT) tilt at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
