Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) of the 2009 Ferris State University women's volleyball team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week (Oct. 12) according to the conference.
Goodson led Ferris State to a pair of conference home victories this past weekend (Oct. 9-10) and finished the two matches with a combined 36 kills (4.00 kills per set) and 11 blocks (1.22 blocks per set) while hitting for a .403 percentage.
In last Friday's (Oct. 9) 3-1 win over Tiffin, Goodson tallied 12 kills en route to a .478 attack percentage and then followed with a career match-high 24 kills on 49 attacks for a .367 hitting clip in a come-from-behind decision against Ashland last Saturday (Oct. 10). Goodson, who totaled nine blocks in the match with seven being assists, accounted for the winning points in the deciding fifth set with a kill and then a match-clinching solo block.
This season, Goodson has registered a team-high 247 kills while averaging 3.21 kills a set to go with a career season-high .240 attack percentage. The 6-2 middle hitter has also posted a squad-leading 82 total blocks on a career single-season best 26 block solos and 56 block assists. Goodson is averaging a team-most 1.06 blocks per set to date.
In 79 career matches, Goodson has accumulated 655 kills with a .219 hitting percentage. She also has chalked up 264 total blocks, which includes 63 block solos and 201 block assists. Goodson has also garnered 67 digs and 13 assists during her collegiate career. Among the FSU's all-time leaders, Goodson presently is listed 21st in total blocks (264), tied for 13th place in block solos (63), and 23rd in block assists (201).
This is the first weekly league honor for Goodson and the third such recognition for a Bulldog player this season. Senior outside hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) received the honor in consecutive weeks (Sept. 14 and 21) earlier this campaign.
The two victories by Ferris State this past weekend extended the Bulldogs' winning streak to three straight as the 2009 team is presently 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the GLIAC's North Division this season.
FSU is in action this weekend (Oct. 16-17) at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament in Lansing, Mich. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play three matches in the two-day tournament at the Aim High Complex, starting this Friday (Oct. 16) versus Southern Indiana at 11 a.m. (EDT). Ferris State will also go up against Missouri-St. Louis at 4 p.m. (EDT) this Friday before taking on Lewis this Saturday (Oct. 17) at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) to conclude the weekend's action.
