The 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Volleyball Preseason Poll was released Tuesday (Aug. 25) and the Ferris State Bulldogs were selected fourth by the coaches in the conference's six-team North Division with 13 points.

Ferris State, under 14th-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, were four points in front of fifth-place Michigan Tech (nine pts.) and six points behind third-place Saginaw Valley State (19 pts.) in the balloting.  Grand Valley State was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division with 24 points and four first-place votes.  Northern Michigan picked up the two remaining first-place votes while accumulating 20 points.  Hillsdale and Wayne State received top billing in the South Division with 22 points apiece.  Hillsdale received three first-place votes and Wayne State netted two first-place votes.

Each of the GLIAC's 12 head coaches voted for the teams within their respective division, but weren't allowed to vote for their own team.  First-place votes were worth five points, second-place votes were worth four, etc.

Ferris State was picked tied for third place in the 2008 conference poll as the Bulldogs claimed 16 points.  Prior to this season's forecast, FSU had been selected to either place or tie for third in three straight seasons.

The GLIAC opens the 2009 campaign with three of its member either ranked or receiving votes in the 2009 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Preaseason Poll.  Grand Valley State is ranked fourth while Saginaw Valley State and Northern Michigan were listed among other teams receiving votes with 25 and two points, respectively.

A season ago, Ferris State registered a 16-13 overall record and was 8-8 in the GLIAC's North Division.  The season performance marked the program's 11th straight winning campaign as the Bulldogs went on to make their 11th consecutive conference tournament appearance.  FSU returns 12 letterwinners from last season's squad, including five starters and its regular libero.

Ferris State embarks on its 37th season of intercollegiate competition this Thursday (Aug. 27) with a home non-conference match against St. Joseph's (Ind.) at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.  A 7 p.m. (EDT) start time is slated for the season opener.

The 2009 GLIAC Tournament will get underway on Nov. 11 with quarterfinal-round play at campus sites.  The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 14 on the campus of the highest remaining seed while the championship match takes place Nov. 15 on the home floor of the highest seeded team.
