The Ferris State University women's volleyball program will be holding its fifth annual "Back To School" night on Thursday, Aug. 27, in conjunction with the 2009 team's season opener versus the Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Pumas at the FSU Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
Opening serve for the non-conference match is 7 p.m. (EDT) and those fans who attend can earn free admission by providing a new school supply, which will in turn be distributed by the Bulldog Athletics Department for use in local elementary classrooms. Items should be in new package condition and can include such materials as crayons, construction paper, markers, glue, notebooks and pencils. All local students, parents and community members are invited and encouraged to attend the first home athletics event of the 2009-10 season.
Following the season-opening match, Ferris State will host its annual Ferris State Invitational on Aug. 28-29 with action slated to take place at the 600-seat Ewigleben Sports Arena and on the two courts inside Jim Wink Arena. Match times for Friday's (Aug. 28) competition are scheduled for 11 a.m. (EDT), 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The tournament concludes on Saturday (Aug. 29) will matches being held at 9:30 a.m. (EDT), 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. All four of Ferris State's tourney matches will take place inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
The 2009 Ferris State Invitational field will consist of California (Pa.), Indianapolis, Quincy, Minnesota Crookston, Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Saint Joseph's (Ind.), Southern Indiana, and West Virginia State along with host Ferris State. All teams will play a total of four matches during the two-day tournament with two contests per day. Admission is $5 per person per day. Faculty/staff ticket prices are $4 while students in grades K-12 are $3. FSU students will be admitted free of charge as will children under the age of five.
Ferris State, which is led by 14th-year head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, registered a 16-13 overall record for the 2008 season. The Bulldogs also were able to extend the program's consecutive winning season streak to 11 straight.
