FSU's Andrea Rich Named All-Region
nior setter-outside hitter Andrea Rich (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) of the 2008 Ferris State University women's volleyball team was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Wednesday (Nov. 26) as she was named to the AVCA's All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention squad.
The postseason honor represents the second for Rich this season as she also earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team recognition for the 2008 season.
Rich was one of eight student-athletes to receive honorable mention laurels and was among 13 individuals from a GLIAC-member school to attain all-region accolades. AVCA member head coaches nominated and selected their respective all-region players through a committee process. The Midwest Region is one of eight regions in the AVCA. All of the first-team selections from each region will be under consideration for All-America honors.
"Andrea is well deserving of this honor," said 13th-year FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm. "She has worked hard over the last four years and this recognition is a reward for her dedication and committment."
Rich paced the Bulldogs in assists (629) and service aces (40) while finishing second among the squad's leaders with a career single-season high 315 digs in 29 matches. A 2007 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, Rich concluded the 2008 season with a team fourth-best and career season-high 165 kills and posted a .166 attack percentage. She registered a squad third-highest 62 total blocks, which included 55 block assists. Rich produced at least 30 assists in a match on four occasions and attained double-digit totals in digs 14 times this fall.
The 5-10 Rich placed high among the conference's statistical leaders, finishing sixth in services aces per set (0.38 avg.) and 10th in assists per set (5.89 avg.). A two-time (2006 and 2007) GLIAC All-Academic Team member, Rich was tabbed as the GLIAC North Division's Player of the Week earlier this season (9/3) and also earned a spot on the 2008 Ferris State Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The 2008 FSU co-captain concluded her four-year (2005-08) ranking ninth on Ferris State's career leaders list in assists (2,016), 22nd in digs (775), and 28th in service aces (96).
Rich and the Bulldogs concluded the 2008 campaign in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament, which represented the program's 11th consecutive conference tourney appearance. Ferris State wrapped up the 2008 season at 16-13 overall and the season record marked the 28th straight year in which the Bulldogs produced a double-figure win total.
The selection of Rich marks the eighth straight season in which Ferris State has had a representative on the AVCA All-Great Lakes Region Team as former Bulldog standout Lindsay Tye achieved first-team accolades a season ago en route to earning second-team All-America kudos.
