Track/CC Awards Announced For 2008-09

The Ferris State University men's and women's track and field/cross country program has recognized six different student-athletes as team award honorees for the 2008-09 athletics season. The announcement was made today (June 29) by first-year head coach Steve Picucci.

Included among the six team award honorees were both three male and female recipients. Three individuals earned two team awards including a pair of women's All-America performers in sophomore Tina Muir (St. Albans, U.K.) and senior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) along with senior men's runner Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids).

The track and field program presented both a Most Valuable Performer Award for the respective events on the track and in the field with both MVP and Bulldog honors handed out for cross country.

The Ferris State women's outdoor track and field team placed eighth while the men's squad was ninth in the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Championships (April 30-May 1), which were held at Hillsdale, Mich. The women's squad finished fourth and the men's team was ninth overall in the GLIAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 27-28) in University Center, Mich.

In cross country, the FSU women's and men's teams finished third and 10th, respectively, at the 2008 GLIAC Championships (Oct. 25), which were hosted by Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldog women's team went on to place third in the 2008 NCAA-II Midwest Regional Championships (Nov. 8) held at FSU's Katke Golf Course and made only the program's third-ever NCAA Division II National Championships appearance last fall (Nov. 22) where they finished 17th overall in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Muir earned All-America honors for Ferris this past season in cross country and Stuart received All-America recognition in indoor track. They both wrapped up their seasons by placing fourth in their respective events during final round competition at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 21-23) at the LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo, Texas. Stuart placed fourth in the 1,500 meters and Muir took fourth place as well in the 5,000 meters as both claimed All-America recognition in outdoor track.
