Midland, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to Wayne State in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on Friday (May 6) morning at the Gerstacker Tennis Center in Midland.
The Warriors took two of the three doubles flights in the national tournament dual between the two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponents. They then captured three of the first four completed singles flights to advance to Friday's (May 7) regional final in the event hosted by Northwood University.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the 2009-10 campaign with a 12-9 overall record after entering the regional as the fifth overall seed. Fourth-seeded Wayne State improved to 16-5 overall.
Natalie Diorio was Ferris' lone singles winner as she topped Correa by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
In the other doubles matches, the Wayne State tandem of Sharon Gill and Kristina Goranskaya defeated FSU's Amy Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard 8-3 at the top flight. Meanwhile, McCall Monte and Milena Vuksanovic emerged victorious against FSU's Diorio and Mary Coleman by a 8-2 score.
Gill was a 6-1, 6-3 winner against Ingle at the first singles flight while Goranskaya topped Rheynard 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at the second spot. Monte also won her match against Flowers with the score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at the fourth flight.
The Bulldogs were making their 18th overall regional tournament
appearance, but their first since 2007.
