Indianapolis, Ind. - The Ferris State University women's
tennis team took part in the 2009 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Midwest Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday
(Sept. 18-19) in Indianapolis, Ind.
The University of Indianapolis played host to one of the 80 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships scheduled to be played across the country in all divisions of college play (NCAA-I, II, III and NAIA) over the last three weeks of September.
The prestigious tournament featured the top NCAA Division II schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships in October.
Four different Bulldog players took part in the event and
competed in both singles and doubles competition.
Junior Amy Ingle (Battle Creek/Hastings) registered a 2-1 overall singles mark and reached the round of 16 before falling to Michigan Tech's Ploy Suthijindawong by a 6-0, 6-1 count.
FSU junior Tiffany Rheynard (Kalamazoo/Gull Lake), sophomore Natalie Diorio (Byron Center) and freshman Tabitha Simpson (Copley, Ohio/St. Vincent's-St. Mary's) all fell in their lone singles matches of the event.
In double play, two Ferris tandems won their opening matches before bowing out in the round of 16 at the tournament. Ingle and Rheynard were seeded fourth overall in the draw and posted a 1-1 mark as did the unseeded combination of Diorio and Simpson.
The Bulldogs resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) dual competition with their first home match of the 2009-10 season against Lake Superior State on Friday, Sept. 25, at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (EDT).
