Bulldogs Sign Holland Christian's Libby Berens
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf program has secured a commitment from prep standout Libby Berens (Holland/Christian), who recently signed with the Bulldogs and will embark on her collegiate golf career at FSU in the fall of 2012.
Berens is a four-time All-Ottawa Kent Gold Conference Medalist and a two-time first team all-state honoree for Holland Christian High School.
"Libby will be an outstanding addition to our program next fall," said FSU head coach Mike Mignano. "She works extremely hard on her game and in the classroom. With her individual and team success at Holland Christian, Libby brings a wealth of leadership qualities to a team that will be losing five seniors.
"We are excited for Libby to be a Bulldog in 2012 and expect her positive attitude and overall demeanor both on and off the course to be contagious," he added.
Regarded as the best golfer in Holland Christian school history, Berens tallied a 38.2 nine-hole scoring average during her fall 2011 senior campaign and placed fourth at the 2011 Division 3 State finals. The regional medalist also placed first in each league jamboree of the season under head coach Sherry Velthouse.
Berens' play this past fall led the Maroons to only their second trip to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Finals in school history with the other coming in 2009 during her sophomore season. The 2010 Holland Sentinel Player of the Year played in the state finals all four years of her prep career as she was an individual qualifier twice.
A four-time all-area selection, Berens headlined a squad that earned team academic all-state recognition this past season. She plans to study architecture at Ferris State.
Ferris State made its 10th consecutive NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance last season. The Bulldogs are currently slated to open their 2012 spring season on March 24-25 at the Northern Kentucky Invitational in Perry Park, Ky.
