The Ferris State University women's golf program continues to secure quality talent throughout the Midwest as the Bulldogs welcome the addition of Cooper Shawen (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) to the 2010-11 team as announced by FSU head coach Mike Mignano.
Shawen will join Ferris State this fall after spending the last two seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10) at Lincoln (Ill.) Junior College.
"Cooper will bring a strong work ethic and passion for the game to our women's golf program," said Mignano, who will begin his fourth season at Ferris State this upcoming 2010-11 season. "She is very athletic and works really hard in the classroom, as shown by her 3.9 grade point average during her two years at Lincoln College. Cooper has demonstrated high levels of leadership and a strong desire to get better every day. I look forward to working with Cooper and helping her develop into the best player she can be."
Shawen averaged 85.0 strokes per round for Lynx during the 2009-10 campaign, which included two top 10 tournament finishes and an individual tournament title as a member of head coach Carol Wilson's squad. She produced an 89.0 average and placed among the top 10 individuals in two 2008-09 tournaments.
A 2008 graduate of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Ill., Shawen was a four-year varsity letterwinner in golf for head coach John Keller. She placed seventh in the Upstate Eight Conference Tournament in her 2004 junior varsity campaign. The 5-10 Shawen served three years as class vice president and was a four-year member of the school's Best Buddies organization. She also worked as a special olympics peer helper from 2005-08.
The daughter of David and Amy Shawen of Bolingbrook, Ill., Cooper plans to major in professional golf management at Ferris State. Her uncles, Mike and Gregg Shawen, played football at Middle Tennessee State University and golf at Eastern Kentucky University, respectively.
Shawen will join incoming freshmen Jacqueline DeBoer (Grand Rapids/South Christian) and Emily Rohdy (Farwell) as the newest additions to the 2010-11 Bulldog women's golf team.
Ferris State made its ninth consecutive NCAA Division II Super Regional Tournament appearance in early May as the Bulldogs captured seventh place with a three-round 969 team score at the Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.
