Women's Golf Ties For Sixth At Nationals
The nationally-ranked Ferris State University women's golf team concluded play in the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships at Findlay, Ohio, with a final score of 1,275 (+123) to finish in a tie for sixth place.
The Bulldogs registered a final-round 322-stroke total in Saturday's (May 16) action at the par 72, 6,219-yard Findlay Country Club course to tie Tarleton State (1275, +123). FSU compiled rounds of 316, 318, and 319 in its three opening rounds.
Nova Southeastern won the team title with a 1,230 score (+78) to out-distance Grand Valley State's runner-up 1,245-stroke total (+93). Individually, Indianapolis' Lyndsay McBride won top honors with a 298 score (+10).
The sixth-place tying performance at nationals marked the ninth best for Ferris State in school history as the Bulldogs were making their sixth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
Alison Meyer (Duluth, Minn./Central) was Ferris' top performer as the senior completed the four rounds with a final 308 score (77-76-80-75=308, +20) to tie for seventh place.
In her final appearance at FSU, senior Raquel Hansen (West Olive/Grand Haven) shot a 321 (83-80-78-80=321, +33) to move up four places and gain a share of 32nd place. Freshman Bryce Hetchler Clinton Township/Fraser) recorded a 325 score (76-81-85-83=325, +37) to earn 41st place while fellow frosh Erin Fuchik (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley) ended up one stroke behind Hetchler with a 42nd-place 326-stroke total (80-83-79-84=326, +38).
Meghan Hunter (Dexter) remained tied for 47th place as the Bulldog senior fired a 333 score (85-81-82-85=333, +45) in what was her final collegiate action.
The Bulldogs, under the direction of second-year head coach Mike Mignano, made their ninth-ever trip to the NCAA-II National Championship Tournament and the program's second straight under Mignano's tutelage.
Those teams competing in the 2009 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships besides Ferris State included Rollins (Fla.), Nova Southeastern (Fla.), Tarleton State (Texas), Grand Valley State, Indianapolis, Florida Southern, Upper Iowa, Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.), Augustana (S.D.), Chico State (Calif.), and West Texas A&M. Four other players took part as individual participants.
Ferris State wrapped up its 2008-09 season ranked 10th nationally by Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NFCA) Women's Golf Coaches' Poll. The Bulldogs finished third place or higher in 10 of their 14 season tournaments, which included three consecutive first-place tourney performances - at Findlay William "Bing" Beall Classic (Sept. 28-29), Siena Heights Invitational (Oct. 4), and Detroit Titans Invitational (Oct. 6-7). Ferris turned in a second-place showing at the 2009 NCAA-II East Regional (May 3-5) in Belle Vernon, Pa.
