Bulldog Women Earn NCAA Tourney Bid

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team received its fourth-ever NCAA Division II Tournament bid Sunday (March 4) in an announcement made during the NCAA-II Selection Show at www.ncaa.com.

FSU, which is presently 22-6 overall, is the region's second seed and will face seventh-seeded Drury (Mo.) this Friday (March 9) in Ashland, Ohio. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. (ET).

Ashland University earned the top seed and will serve as the tournament host with the games to be played in AU's Kates Gymnasium.

While Ashland and Ferris State received the top two overall seeds in the eight-team regional, they were the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schools to earn bids as the remaining six were awarded to Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) institutions.

On the other half of the Bulldogs' side of the bracket, number three seed Wisconsin-Parkside will face sixth-seeded Indianapolis. The other quarterfinal round games Friday feature host Ashland versus eighth-seeded GLVC Tournament Champion Maryville (Mo.) along with fourth-seeded Northern Kentucky taking on fifth-seeded Quincy (Ill.).

The winners of Friday's four quarterfinal round games will advance to Saturday's (March 10) semifinals with the championship game set for Monday, March 12.

More information on the regional tournament, including ticket information and media coverage plans, will be announced on Monday.

The Midwest Regional is one of eight regional tournaments that comprise the 64-team NCAA field. The Midwest Regional champion will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight set for March 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas.

Friday's contest represents the first meeting this season between the Bulldogs and the Panthers.

In the Bulldogs' most recent trip to the NCAA-II Tournament, FSU won its first two games before bowing out in the 2007 NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen with a loss to Drury in the Great Lakes Regional title game at Romeoville, Ill.

The Bulldogs made their first NCAA-II appearance during the 1999-00 campaign and dropped a 90-77 decision to Missouri-St. Louis (3/9/00) in the opening round of the Great Lakes Regional held at Highland Heights, Ky. FSU advanced to the national tournament for the second time in 2003-04 and suffered a 82-69 loss to Ashland at Quincy, Ill.

The Bulldogs, who won the GLIAC North Division Championship for the second time in school history this season, will return to Ashland for the regional quarterfinals after playing their last two contests inside Kates Gymnasium this weekend (March 3-4) where FSU finished as the GLIAC Tournament Runner-Up after a 66-50 title game setback to nationally fourth-ranked Ashland.
