Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball program has added yet another member to its 2011 recruiting class as the Bulldogs today (Feb. 11) announced the addition of prep forward Olivia Walker (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic).
The 5-10 Walker, who's currently midst her prep senior campaign, inked with the Bulldogs during the fall signing period and will join the program as a freshman in the 2011-12 season.
A four-year letterwinner, Walker was a second team all-state honoree as a junior a year ago. She helped Lafayette Central Catholic to a sectional championship while leading the area in scoring and attaining both first team All-Area and All-Hoosier Heartland Conference laurels under head coach Pat Tharp.
"Olivia is a winner and a dead-eye shooter from the arc who has a really quick, high release that is nearly impossible to block," said 13th-year FSU head coach Tracey Dorow. "A coach's kid, she understands the importance of teamwork and is a true competitor.
"We expect her to vie for playing time from the start of her career. She was a perfect match with our players - a BULLDOG from the minute she met our team," Dorow added.
Walker was tabbed as the squad's Offensive Player of the Year and was the Knight Index Leader as a junior while also being chosen among the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association's (IBCA) Top 100 honorees. An Indiana Junior All-Star, Walker also played AAU basketball for the CKB Royals.
As a sophomore, Walker led the area in both points and assists on the hardwood while helping LCC to a conference and sectional championship. She also attained honorable mention all-league honors after earning the squad's Rookie of the Year recognition her freshman year.
This past fall, Walker helped her school to a state volleyball championship as they became the first school from any class in Tippercanoe County to win a state crown. She earned all-state volleyball second team recognition and was an Indiana North All-Star while serving as the squad's team captain. Previously, she led LCC to a state final four appearance in her sophomore campaign.
Walker has also been active in several school and community organizations, including serving as a volunteer for both the Jerry Lewis Telethon and St. Mary's Cathedral. A National Honor Society member, she has also participated as a SEARCH leader and has been on the Knightly Honor Roll. She was a homecoming queen candidate last fall and is a current senior class officer.
The daughter of Brian and Julie Walker, Olivia plans to major in business at FSU. Her brother, Samuel, is a collegiate baseball pitcher at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne while her father played point guard at Purdue. Both her brother and sister, Grace, also won state championships in a sport.
Walker joins previous signees Christina Branch (Grand Rapids/West Michigan Lutheran), Morgan Miller (Brownsburg, Ind.), Katie Mavis (St. Joseph) and Hannah Hoffman (Okemos) as members of FSU's 2011 recruiting class to date.
Ferris State improved to 11-10 overall and 7-8 in the GLIAC with a 69-55 league win over Lake Erie on Thursday (Feb. 10) evening in Painesville, Ohio. The Bulldogs visit Ashland on Saturday (Feb. 12) for a 3 p.m. (ET) conference game at AU's Kates Gymnasium in Ashland, Ohio.
