FSU Women's Hoops Adds Christina Branch

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball program has received its fourth commitment for the 2011-12 season as the Bulldogs today (Dec. 20) announced the addition of prep forward/center Christina Branch (Grand Rapids/West Michigan Lutheran) to a national letter-of-intent.

Branch, who claimed Associated Press Class D First Team All-State accolades a year ago, is presently a senior this campaign for West Michigan Lutheran High School in Wyoming, Mich. She inked with the Bulldogs during the fall signing period.

"Chris is a force inside and will make an immediate impact for us in the post," said 13th-year FSU head coach Tracey Dorow. "She is strong and also deceivingly agile. Most recruits are pretty reserved, but Chris was very comfortable and outgoing at Ferris."

The 6-2 Branch helped West Michigan Lutheran to an Alliance League Championship a year ago when she tallied 367 total points along with 253 rebounds, 68 steals, 67 blocked shots and 38 assists. She received both team Most Valuable Player Award recognition along with all-conference laurels.

The three-year letterwinner is currently serving as the squad's team captain in 2010-11 for head coach Bryan Sinner. Previously, she registered a personal career-high 372 points to go with 295 rebounds, 57 steals and 56 blocks as a sophomore during the 2008-09 season.

Overall, Branch entered her senior campaign as a career 1,000-point scorer with a total of 1,001 points to date in her initial three seasons. She scored 262 points and pulled down 241 boards as a freshman.

"I have a feeling our Ferris fans will love her when they see her fierce competitiveness on the basketball court," Dorow said. "We are eager to help her develop into one of the more dominant true post players we've ever had."

Branch, who has finished with a double-digit scoring average each of her three previous varsity seasons to date, tallied 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three blocks per game in 2009-10 for the Mustangs, who won the Alliance League with a 12-0 record. She averaged 16.9 points per game as a sophomore and 13 as a freshman.

Besides basketball, Branch has also competed in track on the high school level. She plans to major in nursing and is the daughter of Sabrina Branch.

Branch joins previous signees Morgan Miller (Brownsburg, Ind.), Katie Mavis (St. Joseph) and Hannah Hoffman (Okemos) as members of FSU's 2011 recruiting class to date.

The Bulldog women's basketball team is currently 5-5 overall this season as they head into the holiday break.  FSU's next action will be in the Bowie State (Md.) Lady Bulldogs Holiday Classsic on Dec. 29-30 in Bowie, Md.
