Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University junior guard Tricia Principe (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) has been tabbed as this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week in an announcement made today (Nov. 22) by the league office.
Principe helped the Bulldogs to a 1-1 mark to start the year in their own Bulldog Classic this past weekend. She tallied 46 points and averaged 23 points per game, including a game-high 25 points in FSU's 80-71 upset of nationally 15th-ranked Gannon on Sunday (Nov. 21) at Jim Wink Arena.
She also added a team-high 21 points in the Bulldogs' season-opening setback to Edinboro (Pa.) on Saturday (Nov. 20) in Big Rapids. In the two games, Principe shot 17-of-25 (.680) from the floor, including a 8-of-12 (.667) showing from three-point range.
The 5-9 Principe made nine-of-13 shots from the floor and hit five three-pointers in the win over Gannon. Additionally, she converted all four of her free throw attempts in the two games over the weekend.
Principe was honored prior to Saturday's season opener for concluding the 2009-10 season as NCAA Division II's national statistical champion in free throw percentage. The 5-9 Principe sank 86 of 93 free throw attempts in 27 games last season while shooting a nation-high 92.5% from the charity stripe.
A 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Third Team honoree, Principe ranked as the Bulldogs' leading scorer (11.6 ppg.) last season and was the squad's second-best rebounder (5.2 rpg.). She made a school-record 44 consecutive free throws last campaign and compiled 18 double-figure scoring performances.
Her .925 free throw percentage last season marked the best single-season effort in school history as she connected on 86 of 93 attempts last campaign. Along with her school-record streak of 44 make's, Principe also had another streak of 21 in a row a year ago.
Ferris State hits the road for two games this week prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. FSU first visits Lewis on Tuesday, Nov. 23, for a 6:30 p.m. (ET) non-league tilt in Romeoville, Ill. The Bulldogs then face St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Wednesday (Nov. 24) evening with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. (ET) in Rensselaer, Ind.
