Busy Basketball Weekend At Wink Arena
Big Rapids, Mich. - Area basketball fans will have an opportunity to catch several games all in the same place this weekend as both the Ferris State University men's and women's basketball teams will be in action.
The Bulldog women's basketball squad will officially tipoff its season by hosting the Bulldog Classic this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20-21, at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
The slate includes four games over the two days involving two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) members in FSU and Northwood along with two schools from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in Edinboro (Pa.) and former GLIAC member Gannon (Pa.).
Saturday's action begins with Northwood squaring off against Gannon at 11 a.m. (ET) followed by the Bulldogs' season opener versus Edinboro at 1 p.m. (ET).
Additionally, the FSU men's basketball team will also be in action on Saturday as part of a tripleheader with a regional contest against Lewis (Ill.) beginning at 3 p.m. (ET).
On Sunday, the women's classic continues with Northwood facing Edinboro at 1 p.m. (ET) and FSU battling Gannon at 3 p.m. (ET).
Saturday's women's game also marks the season opener for Edinboro, which ended the 2009-10 campaign with a 16-12 record and lost to Gannon in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament. The team returns three starters and was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West Division Preseason poll.
The Gannon women's team was ranked 15th nationally in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll and has six letterwinners back, but needs to replace all five starters from last year's 37-1 squad that reached the NCAA-II Final Four.
Finally, Northwood holds a 1-0 mark to date this year after a 62-57 road win at St. Joseph's (Ind.) last Friday (Nov. 12) evening. The Timberwolves host Alma in their home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 16) night before the Bulldog Classic. They were 13-14 a season ago.
The Ferris State women's basketball team concluded the 2009-10 season with an 8-19 overall record. The Bulldogs were 7-15 in GLIAC action and won their final two regular-season contests.
The Bulldog men will face a stern test in Lewis, which is off to a 2-1 start this year following a three-game appearance last weekend (Nov. 12-14) in the Disney West Coast Tipoff Classic at Anaheim, Calif. They will visit Wayne State on Thursday (Nov. 18) evening prior to facing FSU.
Tickets for all games will be available at the door starting one hour prior to the first contest of the day. FSU students are admitted free with ID. For more information on home ticket sales, please contact the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
A live pay-per-view audio & video webcast will also be offered for all games involving Ferris State via America One (formerly B2 Networks). The FSU broadcasts will be carried live by Bulldog Radio on Charter TV Channel 98 in Mecosta Country or Channel 21 on-campus. Live internet statistics will also be available from Presto Sports.
