The long wait is almost over for the Ferris State University softball team as the Bulldogs are set to make their first home appearance of the 2011 season this Friday (April 8) versus the Lake Superior State Lakers at the FSU Varsity Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader, which is a makeup of last Sunday's (April 3) cancelled twinbill at Rockford (Mich.) High School, is slated for the opening pitch at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) with the second game to follow around 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
Ferris State's first two opening home encounters last week against Davenport (March 29) and Aquinas (March 31) were cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at the FSU Varsity Softball Field. The Bulldogs also were forced to move last Saturday's (April 2) conference twinbill against Lake Superior State to Rockford High School because of field conditions on FSU's diamond.
"We're excited about finally getting an opportunity to play in front of our fans," said Ferris State 14th-year head coach Keri Becker. "Mother nature has been tough on us the last week, but the weather is improving and our field is ready for action. We're hopeful Bulldog fans will come out and watch some exciting softball this Friday afternoon."
The Bulldogs, who are coming off a league doubleheader split at Northwood Wednesday (April 6), have registered 9-13 overall record with a 6-4 GLIAC North Division mark to date this season.
Following this Friday's home outings, Ferris State travels to University Center, Mich., this weekend (April 9-10) for a pair of conference doubleheaders against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. The games are at 1 and 3 p.m. (EDT) this Saturday (April 9) while Sunday's (April 10) twinbill features noon and 2 p.m. (EDT) starting times.
