Softball Listed 22nd In Final National Poll
The 2009 Ferris State University softball team earned a 22nd-place national ranking by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in its final Division II Top 25 Poll, which was released this Monday (June 1) by the NFCA office.
The Bulldogs recorded 81 points in the poll as voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
Ferris State concluded the 2009 season with a 35-10 overall record, which included an 18-4 regular-season mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) under 12th-year head coach Keri Becker. FSU's 35 victories tied last season's total (35-18 overall record in 2008) and matched the program's fourth highest single-season wins output. Ferris has won at least 30 contests in a campaign nine times within the school's annals.
This spring, the Bulldogs made their seventh NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance in the program's 37-year history and their fourth trip in the last five seasons. Ferris compiled a 2-2 record in the double-elimination 2009 NCAA-II Midwest Sub-Regional Tournament (May 8-10) at University Center, Mich., which included a season-ending 1-0 loss to Saginaw Valley State in the championship game (May 10).
FSU was ranked among the top 25 in all 11 2009 regular-season polls and had entered this spring listed sixth in the NFCA's preseason poll (Jan. 28).
