Senior Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone) of the Ferris State University softball team has been named a Spring 2009 recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner's Award for Academic And Athletic Excellence. The announcement was made Monday (June 15) by the conference office.

The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards, which are sponsored by Meijer, Incorporated, are presented following the conclusion of the Fall, Winter, and Spring athletic seasons to six male and female student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

Bruntjens, a 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II All-Midwest Region First-Team selection, produced a 14-8 pitching record this spring with a 1.76 earned run average and a team-best 97 strikeouts in 127.0 innings. The 2009 Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region Second-Team performer started 20 of her 24 appearances in the circle this season while registering three shutouts and holding the opposition to a .224 batting average. At the plate, Bruntjens hit for a career season-high .300 average with a single-season best 33 base hits in 110 at bats. The 2009 All-GLIAC First-Team honoree racked up eight doubles, two home runs, 22 RBIs, nine runs scored, and eight sacrifice hits to go with a .427 slugging percentage and a .310 on-base percentage. Bruntjens also produced six multiple-hit games and turned in a team-high tying five multi-RBI game efforts this campaign.

A three-time (2007-09) GLIAC All-Academic Team member, Bruntjens was the 2008-09 winner of FSU's Helen Bennett Award as the most outstanding female student-athlete and earned second-team recognition on the 2009 ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-District IV College Division Softball Team.

Bruntjens wrapped up her three-year (2007-09) Ferris State career ranking among the program's all-time leaders in several pitching and hitting statistical categories. In pitching, the two-time (2007-08) NFCA Scholar-Athlete presently ranks third in strikeouts (307), fourth in victories (43), tied for fourth in shutouts (14), sixth in innings pitched (415.1), eighth in earned run average (1.53), and ninth in complete games (41). In batting, Bruntjens ranks tied for 19th in home runs (six) and tied for 26th in doubles (17).

This spring, Bruntjens played an integral role in leading Ferris State to the program's seventh NCAA Division II Regional Tournament appearance as the 21st nationally-ranked Bulldogs concluded the season at 35-10 overall and 18-4 in the GLIAC.

In 2008, Bruntjens helped lead FSU to a NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tourney title en route to being tabbed as the tourney's Most Outstanding Player as the Bulldogs would go on to finish in a fifth-place tie at the NCAA-II Softball Championships.

Bruntjens joins senior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville) of the football team as Ferris State student-athletes to garner the GLIAC Commissioner's Award for the 2008-09 athletics season.

To date, Ferris State has had a total of six student-athletes receive the GLIAC Commissioner's Award since the program's inception in fall 2007.
