Ferris State Visits A Pair Of Nationally-Ranked Softball Teams This Weekend
Leading Off: The 2010 Ferris State University softball team is on the road for the remainder of the 2010 regular season, starting this weekend (April 24-25) with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders against a pair of nationally-ranked teams. The Bulldogs will square off against 17th-ranked Saginaw Valley State this Saturday (April 24) and then take on ninth-ranked Wayne State on Sunday (April 25). Both Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State are currently ranked in the latest (April 21) National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division Top 25 Poll.
Ferris State Record: Ferris State sports a 20-14 overall record and is 11-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this season to date. The Bulldogs have currently won three of their last four contests despite having a three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday (April 21) with a 2-1 home conference loss to Northwood at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State gained a split in home league doubleheaders against Grand Valley State (April 14), Tiffin (April 17), and Ashland (18) before sweepin a twinbill at Lake Superior State (April 19). FSU has compiled an 11-5 record this April. Ferris State is presently 5-7 at home, 6-0 on the road, and 9-7 at neutral site encounters this spring.

Ferris State - Keri Becker (Saginaw Valley State, 1995), 13th season, 403-251-1 (.616). Becker, the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State's Softball history, has guided the Bulldogs to three (1998, 1999, and 2008) NCAA Division II National Softball Championship Tournament appearances. The 1998 squad placed third nationally while the 1999 team set a school record for single-season victories (46 total). The 2008 squad tied for fifth-place honors after capturing the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional title. Becker, who has been recognized as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) Coach of the Year three times (1997, 2003, and 2008) was a member of the 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA)/NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
Becker Among The Best: Prior to this 2010 season, FSU head coch Keri Becker ranked 45th among the NCAA Division II's active coaches in victories (393) and was 47th in winning percentage (.618). She was also listed 52nd nationally by percentage among the winningest all-time coaches in NCAA Division II entering this campaign.

All-Time Series: Ferris State is 39-48-0 vs. Saginaw Valley State, 40-85-0 vs. Wayne State.
400 Victories!: Head coach Keri Becker earned her 400th career coaching win in the Bulldogs' 4-1 home decision over Tiffin last Saturday (April 17) in game two of a GLIAC doubleheader. Becker is the FSU program's all-time winningest coach and has guided the Bulldogs to nine winning seasons during her tenure, which includes three NCAA Championship Tournament appearances (1998, 1999, and 2008).
Bulldog Bites: Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Morris (Jenison) had her eight-game hitting streak snapped against Northwood (April 21) after going hitless in three at bats. Morris' string began in game one of a home league doubleheader versus Grand Valley State (April 14) and she's presently batting .346 (9-26) in her last nine outings . . . Ferris State is has recorded a .278 team batting average (125-450) in its last 17 contests after hitting for a .226 average (98-433) in its initial 17 outings this campaign. Defensively, the Bulldogs have registered a 1.81 earned run average (29 earned runs) in 112.0 innings the past 17 games compared to a 2.21 earned run average (37 earned runs) in 117.0 innings through their first 17 encounters . . . FSU is 17-1 in games this season when leading after four innings and 1-12 when trailing thru a contest's first four frames . . . Freshman outfielder Morgan Kramerich (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) has produced a team-leading seven multiple-hit game performances this season, which includes three four-hit outings . . . Senior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) is two more hits away from moving into a 16th-place tie with Anne Koltvedt (1998-01; 143 career hits) on the Bulldogs' all-time hits leader list.
Nearing The Century Mark: Seniors Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) and Rachel Wade (Canton) are both three base hits shy of recording the 100th hit in their respective careers. Flores has totaled 97 hits in 335 at bats for a .290 career hitting average while Wade has generated her 97-hits total in 352 official plate appearances and is batting at a .276 career average.
Gold Glove Fielder: Outfielder Rachel Wade has went errorless in 121 contests during her three-year (2008-10) collegiate career at Ferris State. Wade has presently recorded 83 putouts to go with seven assists in the field.
Climbing The Charts: Senior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) notched her 24th career win in Monday's (April 19) 6-5 game-two league victory at Lake Superior State. Stevenson has a 24-8 career mark in the circle with those 24 victories ranking the 12th highest total in FSU Softball history. The southpaw hurler is now four shy of tying Rachel Chartier's (2002-05) 28 career wins output for 11th place honors. Stevenson, who has fanned 171 batters in her Bulldog career, is just two shy of matching Jennifer Colvin's (1999-02) 10th-place 173 strikeouts for 10th place on the program's all-time charts.
National Stats Leaders: Ferris State ranks 37th among the NCAA Division II statistical leaders this week in fielding percentage (.966) through games of April 18. The Bulldogs are listed 43rd in earned run average (2.13), 87th in win-loss percentage (.581), and 110th in stolen bases per game (1.0). Individually, Kayle Stevenson ranks 30th in hits allowed per seven innings (4.8), 58th in shutouts (4.0), and 72nd in earned run average (2.07) while freshman pitcher Dana Bowler (Lockport, Ill.) is 38th in saves (2.0).
All-League Performers: Ferris State returns three All-GLIAC players from the 2009 season led by second baseman Amanda Harrington, who earned first-team recognition. Designated player Rhea Flores and pitcher Kayle Stevenson both attained second-team laurels.
High Expectations: Ferris State is listed among other teams receiving votes in the 2010 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs received eight points in the national poll to finish two points behind Ashland and Augustana (S.D.). The national poll, which was released on Jan. 27 by the NFCA, is voted on by 16 NCAA-II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
Looking Back: The 2009 Bulldogs concluded the season with a 35-10 overall record, which included a second-place tying 18-4 GLIAC mark. Ferris State concluded the campaign ranked 22nd nationally in the NFCA's final Division II Top 25 Poll with 81 points. FSU's 35 victories matched the program's fourth highest single-season wins output. Ferris has won at least 30 contests in a campaign nine times within the school's annals.
Ferris State In The NCAA Tournament: FSU made its seventh NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance in 2009 and its fourth trip in the last five years. The Bulldogs compiled a 2-2-0 mark in the double-elimination 2009 sub-Midwest Regional Tourney (March 8 & 10) held at University Center, Mich. Ferris State was crowned Great Lakes Regional Tournament champions in 2008 and went on to a fifth-place tying showing at the National Softball Championships in Houston, Texas. The Bulldogs, who are 24-13 all-time in NCAA Tournament competition, have made three national tournament appearances (1998, 1999, and 2008) to date in their program's history. The 1998 team posted a 3-2 tourney mark en route to placing third in Ferris' national tourney debut.
