FSU Women Third, Men 10th At GLIAC Meet

The Ferris State University women's cross country team took third place while the men's squad finished 10th at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held Saturday (Oct. 25) at Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The league meet was hosted by Lake Superior State University for the first time since 1998. Grand Valley State captured both the men's and women's titles in the event.

GVSU placed seven runners among the top 10 finishers in claiming the women's title with 25 points. Wayne State finished second (66 points), the Bulldogs were third (121 points) and Northwood took fourth (126) in the 12-team field. Wayne State's Rachelle Malette won the women's individual championship in atime fo 21:24.8 on the 6K course.

The Bulldogs were led by senior Mikinzie Stuart, who took eighth place overall in a time of 22:14.5 among the 136 runners in the field. Sophomore Megan Josey was 17th (23:08.4), senior Jackie Green came in 21st (23:24.7), sophomore Paige Onweller was 34th (23:54.7) and sophomore Sarah Creed took 41st place (24:06.0).

FSU sophomore Nikki Wiers placed 66th (25:07.6), freshman Kaye Gray came in 77th (26:24.1) and freshman Elizabeth Troost finished 119th (26:55.4).

In the men's division, Grand Valley State tallied 31 points to take first place with four runners among the top 10 finishers in the 138-runner event. GVSU's Chris Hammer won the individual race in a time of 25:00.0 on the 8K course.

Wayne State placed second in the men's field (69 points), Ashland was third (90) and Hillsdale finished fourth (95) with the Bulldogs placing 10th overall with 239 points among the 11 competing teams.

Ferris freshman Tyler Crossman led FSU by finishing 31st overall (26:01.0). Sophomore Alex Best came in 41st (26;14.7), senior Mike Mangieri placed 49th (26:34.1), junior att Jozwiak was 57th (26:53.9) and junior Brian Reynolds finished 61st (27:15.8). Junior Darby Davila was 69th (28:06.6) and freshman Ethan Earnst wound up 76th (29:23.2) for FSU.

The Bulldogs will next host the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships slated for Saturday, Nov. 8, at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. Action begins with the men's 10K race at 11 a.m. (EDT) followed by the women's 6K event at 12 p.m. (EDT).
