Ferris State Hockey Adds Two Recruits To Bolster Incoming Freshman Class

Big Rapids, Mich. -- The Ferris State University men's hockey team has announced two additional student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the Bulldogs in the future. Learn more about the new recruits below.

Justin Kapelmaster
Coral Springs, Fla. • Wichita Falls (NAHL) • G • 6-1, 195 • DOB: 10/26/1995

Scouting Report from Associate Head Coach Drew Famulak:
Justin has a proven track record and an ability to compete at a high level...His resume includes playing in championship games throughout his career and his ability to compete for loose pucks and see through traffic has helped in his development during his time at the junior hockey level.

Appeared in 46 games during his first NAHL season with Wichita Falls, earning a record of 33-8-2-1 with four shutouts...Finished the 2015-16 regular season with a GAA of 2.06 along with a save percentage of .924...In his first two playoff contests for the Wildcats, Kapelmaster has allowed just three goals for a 2-0 record including a shutout...During the 2014-15 season he played for the Trenton Golden Hawks of the OJHL, finishing the regular season with a 29-7-0 record in 40 games with a GAA of 2.09 and a .925 save percentage...Kapelmaster was named OJHL Goaltender of the Year after leading the Golden Hawks to the East Division regular season title...Was also named the Vaughn Hockey NAHL Goaltender of the Month for November 2015.


Dominic Lutz
Livonia, Mich. • Topeka (NAHL) • F • 6-0, 195 • DOB: 1/19/1996

Scouting Report from Associate Head Coach Drew Famulak:
Dominic has a Michigan pedigree, coming to Ferris State following an extremely successful high school hockey career in which he was recognized as "Mr. Hockey" in the state of Michigan...He will follow in the footsteps of Gerald Mayhew, who was also a "Mr. Hockey" winner in 2011…His ability to score goals at every level has proven he is ready to take the next step in the collegiate game...Dominic will be another high-end Michigan grown player added to our roster.

Finished the 2015-16 regular season as the second-leading scorer for Topeka with 50 points in 58 games on 26 goals and 24 assists as well as a +16 rating…Also had 13 power play goals and eight power play assists, to go along with five game-winning goals and 183 shots on net during the regular season...Through two playoff games, Lutz has scored a goal and an assist...During the 2014-15 season, Lutz had 18 points in 54 games with the Roadrunners in his first NAHL campaign...Before joining Topeka, Lutz was recognized as the USHS Michigan "Mr. Hockey" as the best high school player in Michigan while playing for Livonia-Stevenson High School with 81 points (43g, 38a) in 27 games...Lutz also played for the NAHL Selects Team at the 2016 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, where he had two goals in two games...He has served as team captain of both Livonia-Stevenson High School and the Topeka Roadrunners.

Lutz will become the sixth player to play for the Roadrunners and Ferris State, joining Cody Chupp (2006-10), Nate Hennig (2007-11), Tommy Hill (2008-12), Nate Milam (2011-13), and Tyler Andrew (2014-present).

Ferris State closed the 2015-16 campaign by making the program's fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, including the third in the past five years to date. Along with this year's run to the NCAA West Regional Championship game, the Bulldogs also won the WCHA's Broadmoor Trophy as the league's Final Five Champion. It marked the first conference tournament championship in school history and came on the heels of conference regular-season titles in both 2012 and 2014.

Along with a Frozen Four berth and national title game showing in 2012, FSU also has reached the regional final and the final eight of the NCAA Tournament in both 2014 and 2016.
