Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's ice hockey fans can vote now for Bulldog senior left wing Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario), who was announced today as one of 77 nominees for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award.
Awarded annually to college hockey's top player, the Hobey Baker's highly popular fan-voting phase opened at noon CT on Monday, January 7. Visit the Hobey Baker website: www.hobeybakeraward.com.
Click on the Vote for Hobey icon and follow the prompts to make your selection from this year's outstanding crop of 77 college hockey players.
This first phase of fan balloting will run now through March 10, 2013. Phase two of fan balloting will begin on March 22 from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists. The fans' vote accounts for a full 1 percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.
Award criteria include candidates emulating the exceptional character traits exhibited by the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. An American super-hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
Earlier this season, Bonis was selected as one of 20 candidates for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate hockey, which honors men's ice hockey student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice.
Bonis, who was named to the 2012 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team as the Bulldogs reached the national championship game, placed third among FSU's scoring leaders a season ago with 30 points. He had a squad second-best 19 goals and added 11 assists in playing all 43 contests. Bonis' totals included three game-winning goals and four power-play markers last campaign.
Currently, he's tallied 15 points this season on a squad-high tying nine goals and six assists to date. His efforts as team captain have helped the Bulldogs move into a tie for fourth place in the CCHA standings following a 3-0 shutout against Michigan State this past Saturday (Jan. 5) in Big Rapids.
The Bulldogs will host the Ohio State Buckeyes in CCHA action this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. (ET) both nights.
