Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University's historic run to the NCAA Frozen Four and the national championship game in NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey is among the nominees for the 2012 Michigan Sports Story of the Year, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The daily publication is currently conducting an online poll to determine the year's best in several categories, including the top sports story of 2012 and readers are encouraged to cast their vote on the publication's official website (see link).

The top 16 stories of 2012 were chosen based on impact, timing, uniqueness and legacy and fans are asked to consider those factors when voting for the year's best.

Ferris State's historic Frozen Four run is listed along with such other stories as the NHL lockout, Michigan State winning the Big Ten men's basketball championship, the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom, Miguel Cabrera's triple crown chase, Calvin Johnson's single-season receiving record, the Detroit Tigers' signing of Prince Fielder in addition to the Tigers' World Series run and more.

It is also one of only four stories involving collegiate athletics across the state listed along with the MSU basketball title, Michigan's stunning loss to Ohio in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament along with a down year for football, which included both UM and MSU football.

Additionally, Ferris State Hockey was featured as one of four stories involving hockey at any level along with the NHL lockout, the retirement of Lidstrom and the Red Wings' impressive home win streak.

The Bulldogs' most impressive season in school history came to a close with a 26-12-5 overall record in 2011-12 and included a first-ever trip to the Frozen Four and a national runner-up finish.  FSU's 26 wins were the second-most in school history and the season highlights also included the school's second-ever Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Championship and a Midwest Regional crown.
