FSU's Kyle Bonis One Of National Candidates For Senior CLASS Award

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University senior left wing Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario) has been selected as one of 20 candidates for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate hockey.

The award honors men's ice hockey student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 2012-13 candidate class includes six candidates who have cumulative grade point averages above 3.5 overall. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four in Pittsburgh April 11 and 13.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

A year ago, former Bulldog All-America defenseman Chad Billins was chosen as one of the 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.

Bonis, who was named to the 2012 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team as the Bulldogs reached the national championship game, placed third among FSU's scoring leaders a season ago with 30 points.  He had a squad second-best 19 goals and added 11 assists in playing all 43 contests.  Bonis' totals included three game-winning goals and four power-play markers last campaign.

Currently, he leads Ferris State this season with 11 points on a squad-high six goals and five assists to date. His efforts as team captain have helped the Bulldogs move into a tie for second place in the CCHA standings and only one point out of first place.  In addition, the Bulldogs and Notre Dame are the only teams in the conference to record five wins in league action to date.

The Bulldogs, who vaulted to 16th in the USCHO.com National Rankings this week, will be idle over the Thanksgiving break with a week off before returning to action at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids against the University of Michigan Wolverines on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.  The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. (ET) both nights.

Tickets for the Michigan series are currently on sale and fans can save money by purchasing in advance.  Call 231-591-2888 for more information or visit FerrisStateBulldogs.com.  Tickets are also available online at StarTickets.com.
