Bulldog Hockey 11th In Two Collegiate Polls This Week

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, which opens the 2012-13 regular-season campaign this weekend, is ranked 11th in two seperate college hockey polls announced today (Oct. 8).

The Bulldogs climbed three spots from 14th in the preseason poll to 11th in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Division I Poll.  Additionally, FSU held onto its 11th-place preseason ranking in this week's USCHO.com Division I National Poll.

The Bulldogs, who concluded the 2011-12 campaign with a final number two ranking in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll following an appearance in the national championship game, received 176 total points this week in voting conducted in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA).  The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.

Minnesota, which reached the national semifinals a year ago, unseated defending NCAA Division I National Champion Boston College as this week's top-ranked team with 14 first-place votes and 483 total points.  They were followed by BC at only one point behind with 482 points and 19 first-place votes.  Meanwhile, Michigan came in third with North Dakota fourth and Cornell fifth in the top five overall.

FSU is among five Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) members found among the nation's top 15 teams in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings along with Michigan, Western Michigan (7th), Miami (8th) and Notre Dame (13th).

The Bulldogs received 466 total points in the USCHO.com poll.  The USCHO.com Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.

Boston College led this week's USCHO.com poll with 37 first-place votes and 978 total points.  They were followed by Minnesota in second place with 948 points and 12 first-place votes.  Michigan, North Dakota and Cornell held onto spots 3-5 in the USCHO.com poll as well.

The USCHO.com national top 20 includes six CCHA members in Michigan (3rd), Miami (8th), Western Michigan (10th), FSU (11th), Notre Dame (14th) and Michigan State (16th).

Ferris State is the defending CCHA Regular-Season Champion and reached the national championship game at the Frozen Four last season in Tampa, Fla.

FSU opened its 2012-13 campaign in impressive fashion on Sunday (Oct. 7) with a dominating 8-2 exhibition win over Ryerson University at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris State will open the 2012-13 regular-season on the road this weekend as the Bulldogs visit RPI on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, for a two-game non-league set in Troy, N.Y.  Action gets underway both nights at 7:05 p.m. (ET) and the broadcast can be heard live on Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network online at FerrisStateBulldogs.com.

The Bulldogs will play their home-opening series on Oct. 19-20 as they entertain the Mercyhurst Lakers at the Ewigleben Ice Arena for a pair of 7:05 p.m. (ET) faceoffs.  FSU will celebrate its historic national runner-up finish a year ago by hoisting new banners inside the facility on Oct. 19.
