The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team won its second-ever NCAA Tournament contest with a 2-1 win over the Denver Pioneers on Friday (March 23) night in the Midwest Regional at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. The Bulldogs will square off against the Cornell Big Red in the regional final on Saturday (March 24) night with faceoff set for 9 p.m. (ET). FSU is the second seed and Cornell is the fourth seed in the regional. The winner moves on to the NCAA Frozen Four set for April 5 & 7 in Tampa Bay, Fla.
Saturday's regional title game will be televised live on ESPNU along with other selected cable and satellite providers. It will also be broadcast on Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network with Dom Hennig and Danny Kowalski calling the action. Ferris State vs. Cornell:
The Bulldogs hold a 2-1 all-time series advantage over the Cornell Big Red. It includes a home win along with a split on the road. The Bulldogs scored 14 goals in those three games. The away series was played on Jan. 24-25, 1997. Ferris State hosted Cornell on Jan. 24, 1998.
First Career Goal:
Ferris State freshman defenseman Simon Denis (Burnaby, Saskatchewan) picked the perfect time to register his first career goal as his shot at 2:54 into the third period versus Denver gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead over the Pioneers on Friday night. It turned out to be the game-winning goal in the game.
Second Regional Final:
The Bulldogs will be making their second-ever appearance in an NCAA Regional and are seeking their firstever trip to the Frozen Four. In the 2002-03 season, the Bulldogs defeated North Dakota 5-3 in their regional opener before bowing out in the regional championship game with a 7-4 loss to Minnesota in the West Regional at St. Paul, Minn.
Notes From Friday's win:
Friday's matchup with Denver was only the second-ever meeting between the two programs and FSU improved to 2-0 all-time versus the Pioneers ..... FSU senior goalie Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) totaled 25 saves in Friday's win for FSU and had several big stops in the third period ..... The Bulldogs' first goal was scored by senior forward Jordie Johnston (Rosetown, Saskatchewan), who tallied his team-leading 19th goal of the campaign.
Keeping The CCHA Alive:
Ferris State was the lone Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) team to advance to the regional final on Friday as Michigan, Miami and Michigan State all dropped opening-round games. Western Michigan will open its NCAA regional play on Saturday. The CCHA had five of the 16 teams in the tournament field.
Another Bulldog Win:
The 2011-12 Ferris State University Bulldogs have posted a program third-best 24-11-5 record to date this year with Friday's victory. The 2002-03 team holds the top spot with a 31-10-1 record at the end of the season. The 1979-80 squad compiled a 26-11-1 overall record, which marked the Bulldogs first campaign as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).
Ferris State claimed the CCHA Regular-Season Championship title this season with a first-place 16-7-5 league record. The Bulldogs accumulated 54 league points and outdistanced Michigan and Western Michigan by four points. Both UM and WMU posted 50 league points in finishing second to the Bulldogs. Ferris State was able to raise the CCHA Regular Season Trophy for the first time since 2002-03 and only the second time in program history.
