Big Rapids, Mich. - A NCAA Selection Show party for the nationally-ranked 2011-12 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will be held this Sunday (March 18) at The Gate in Big Rapids with Bulldog fans, alumni and friends invited to attend this special event.
The 30-minute selection show of the 16-team NCAA Division I Tournament field will be broadcast live on ESPNU this Sunday, starting at 12 p.m. (ET). In anticipation of this event, The Gate will be having a "Selection Show" party with Bulldog players and staff scheduled to arrive shortly after 11:30 a.m. (ET).
Free pizza will be provided to fans while supplies last courtesy of the Blueline Club.
Additionally, the team will hold an "open practice" following the selection announcement at 1:30 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena on-campus with all fans encouraged and welcome to attend.
If selected, Ferris State will be making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the program's history as the 2002-03 team earned the first-ever berth. The 2002-03 squad was among the national tourney's final eight teams as the Bulldogs advanced to the West Regional Championship game.
The Ferris State University men's ice hokey team, which claimed the Central College Hockey Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Championship for the second time in school history this season, remains one of the favorites to receive an NCAA Division I Tournament at-large bid despite falling in the second round of the CCHA Playoffs this past weekend.
The Bulldogs are currently still tied for sixth in the PairWise Rankings following weekend action. The PairWise ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I Tournament. Therefore, if the tournament were to start tomorrow, the Bulldogs would potentially be among the 16 selected teams that make the field.
FSU presently has the nation's seventh-best winning percentage this campaign with a 23-11-5 overall record and the Bulldogs' strength of schedule is among the top 25 teams in the country. The Bulldogs are also eighth in the country in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
The winners of five conference tournaments around the country will receive their league's automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament, which means at least 11 other slots are available for at-large teams pending the results of league tournament action.
The four regional sites and dates for the 2012 NCAA Tournament are as follows: East (March 23-24) at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn; Midwest (March 23-24) at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.; West (March 24-25) at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.; and the Northeast (March 24-25) at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.
The winners of each region will advance to the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four with the semifinals and the championship game to be held Thursday, April 7, and Saturday, April 7, respectively, at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.
