The Opening Faceoff: The nationally 17th-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will be returning home after playing the last three games on the road. The Bulldogs will take on ninth-ranked Colgate this weekend (Jan. 6-7) in a two-game non-conference series at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Friday's tilt will begin at 7:05 p.m. (EDT) with Saturday's competition beginning at 4:05 p.m. (EDT).
2011-12 Bulldog Hockey Ticket Information: Tickets for all 2011-12 Bulldog home regular-season hockey games can be purchased by contacting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888. The FSU Athletics Ticket Office's normal hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) weekdays. The ticket office will also offer extended hours until 7 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday's throughout the season and be open on hockey home game Saturday's at 12 p.m. (ET).
Single-game tickets may also be purchased by contacting Star Tickets at 1-800-585-3737 or online at Star Tickets website: www.startickets.com. Tickets are also available at all Meijer store locations in West Michigan and at the Student Services Office in the FSU Rankin Student Center.
New Year's Special: The Ferris State Athletic department is offering $6 advanced tickets for the Jan. 6 game against Colgate. A limited number of the discounted tickets are available while supplies last. The offer is not valid on game day. The $6 price represents half of the gameday single reserve price of $12 and is a perfect stocking stuffer for Bulldog fans.
Military Appreciation Night: Ferris State University Athletics will hold "Military Appreciation Night" on Saturday, Jan. 7. Current and former military members and dependents of Delta Company will receive free admission along with special activities throughout the day. A skate with the team will take place after the game with free skate rental to military and their dependents along with concession vouchers for the military members.
Media Coverage: A live video and audio webcast will be available for all 2011-12 FSU men's ice hockey home games through Stretch Internet for a charge of $7.95 on FSU's Athletics Website at www. FerrisStateBulldogs.com. Live internet statistics will also be available for all Bulldog home contests with a live audio stream for all home and away games.
The Records: Ferris State is presently 11-8-1 overall and 7-6-1-(0) in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) this season. Ferris State dropped both holiday tilts as they competed in the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup Tournament this past weekend (Dec. 29-30) in Burlington, Vermont. The Bulldogs remain ranked fifth among the CCHA with 22 points. Lake Superior State is one point ahead with 23 in the fourth spot. Notre Dame and Western Michigan are tied for second place in the standings with 27 points. Ohio State is atop the conference with 32 points.
Colgate currently holds a 12-4-2 overall record and has a 6-2-0 record in the ECAC. Colgate is second in the standings, right behind Cornell. The Raiders are unbeaten in their last seven outings, which includes only one tie. Their last loss came on Nov. 12 when they fell 4-2 against Harvard. The Raiders last played against Canisius where they won 5-1 on Dec. 30.
The Coaches: Ferris State - Bob Daniels (Michigan State, 1982), 20th season, 319-357-75 (.476) – (4-4-1 vs. Colgate). Daniels has the distinction of being the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State history. He was honored as the 2002-03 CCHA Coach of the Year and the Inside College Hockey (INCH) Coach of the Year, but the crowing highlight of his coaching career was being chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Spencer Penrose Award as the ACHA's Division I National Hockey Coach of the Year. He was among three finalists for both the 2007-08 and 2009-10 CCHA Coach of the Year Awards.
Colgate - Don Vaughan (St. Lawrence, 1984), 19th season, 306-270-68 (.670) – Under Vaughan's tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 17 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to six ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2010-11 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored three Hobey Baker Award finalists, four All-Americans, an ECAC Player of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 all-ECAC Hockey selections.
Colgate - The Raiders' roster boasts five NHL draft picks, including the team's top two scorers. Senior forward Austin Smith leads the Colgate squad and the nation with 31 points coming from 19 goals and 12 assists. Sophomore forward Chris Wagner has compiled seven goals and 15 assists thus far in the season. The team's leading defender, junior Jeremy Price, a Vancouver draft pick, has tallied two goals and 10 assists. Sophomore goaltender Eric Mihalik has spent the majority of time in net for Colgate and has compiled a 8-3-1 record, which includes a .912 save percentage and a 2.48 goals against average. The Raiders have won seven of the last nine games. They have gone unbeaten in seven games, with six wins and one tie.
The All-Time Series: The two squad's will battle for the 10th and 11th times this weekend as Ferris State holds a 4-4-1 record against Colgate in an all-time series that began in the 1999-00 season. The Bulldogs are 2-2-0 at home and 2-2-0 in Colgate's barn. Their lone tie game came in a 3-3 overtime tie at the Sheraton/TD Catamount Cup in Vermont on Jan. 3, 2009. The only current Bulldog to notch a point in that game was senior defender Derek Graham, who was a freshman forward at the time.
National Rankings: The Bulldogs are currently ranked 17th in the USCHO.com Division I Men's poll. The ranking marks the lowest Ferris State has dropped in the rankings since their 14th ranked debut on Oct. 17. The Bulldogs have dropped out of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings. Colgate is ranked ninth in the USCHO.com poll.
Top Fifteen Goalies: Freshman goaltender CJ Motte (St. Claire) is currently ranked fourth among NCAA Division I Goaltending Leaders and has compiled a 4-3-1 record to date. He has allowed only 14 goals, with a 1.73 goals against average, in eight games played. Motte has tallied two shutouts and has made 202 saves, for a .935 save percentage. Senior goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) is ranked eighth in goaltending leaders, having a 7-3-0 record, with two shutouts. He has 19 goals against and a 1.90 goals against average along with a .933 save percentage.
The Defense: Ferris State is currently fifth in NCAA Division I Team Defense, allowing 2.10 goals per game. Senior defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) leads the defense with 12 points, coming from one goal and 11 assists. Senior Brett Wysopal has two goals and six assists from the blue line.
Sheraton/TD Catamount Cup Tournament: Ferris State dropped both holiday tilts as they competed in the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup Tournament this past weekend (Dec. 29-30). In the opening game against RIT, the Bulldogs were unable to get a goal as they lost 3-0. The squad then fell to Vermont in a 4-2 decision the following day. The 3-0 loss to RIT marked the fourth time the Bulldogs have been shut out this season. In their eight losses this season, Ferris State has scored only seven combined goals. In the 4-2 loss against Vermont, sophomore forward Justin DeMartino (Macomb, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal and provided an assist. Freshman defender Simon Denis (Burnaby, British Columbia) tallied his second assist in three games, from senior forward Jordie Johnston's (Rosetown, Saskatchewan) goal.
No Place Like Home: The Bulldogs have compiled a 111-73-25 record (.581) at home since the 2000-01 campaign. FSU has reached double-figure home win totals in a season on four occasions, which includes 15 victories in the 2002-03 (15-4-1) and 2009-10 (15-3-2) campaigns.
Co-Captains: Senior defensemen Chad Billins (Marysville) and Tommy Hill (Portage) are serving as the Bulldogs' team co-captains in the 2011-12 campaign. They are the 40th and 41st individuals in the program's history to sport the captain's 'C' on their jersey.
Lowe's Senior CLASS Award - Senior defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) of the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been chosen as a candidate for the 2011-12 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in a recent announcement. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community, and competition. The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in early February and those 10 individuals will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.
CCHA Preseason Polls: Ferris State was picked to finish ninth in the 2011-12 CCHA Coaches Preseason Poll with 50 points. The Bulldogs received 425 points in the media poll to place tied for seventh among the 11 conference teams. Points were awarded on a 12-11-10-9, etc., basis. League coaches ranked the CCHA teams, excluding their own school, in the order they predicted the regular season will end.
TV Exposure: Ferris State will be making a combined three national and regional appearances on television this season. The Bulldogs made their TV debut on Comcast Television, which showcased FSU at Michigan earlier this year (10/27). The network will also feature FSU's home matchup against Notre Dame at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids (2/11). FS Detroit (FSD) will feature the Ferris State at Western Michigan game (2/24). Ferris Television has plans to carry all remaining home contests following the Colgate series.
