Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has received some well-deserved recognition for its start to the 2011-12 campaign.
The Bulldogs were recently chosen as one of the nation's 10 biggest surprises at the mid-point of the season by NHL.com.
FSU was listed eighth in the midseason report issued late last week. The article was wrote by NHL.com correspondent Bob Snow.
About the Bulldogs, the story notes "The Ferris State Bulldogs are 7-6-1 in the CCHA, a point behind Lake Superior State. They went to the NCAA tourney just once in program history, led by Chris Kunitz in 2003. "We would like to finish in the top 4 of the CCHA league standings," said long-time coach Bob Daniels. "Our four senior defensemen have been outstanding."
Fellow Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) member Ohio State was featured as the nation's biggest surprise with Massachusetts-Lowell second and future conference foe Michigan Tech of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) listed third.
FSU's opponent this week, Colgate, was picked fourth followed by Providence (#5), Mercyhurst (#6) and another CCHA member in Lake Superior State (#7). Behind the Bulldogs, Clarkson (#9) and Alabama-Huntsville (#10) rounded out the top 10 overall.
Ferris State is currently listed 17th nationally this week in the United States College Hockey Online.com (USCHO) Poll and owns a 11-8-1 mark to date this campaign. FSU has been a top 10-ranked team for much of the season.
This weekend, FSU hosts Colgate at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids. Friday night's (Jan. 6) series opener against the ninth-ranked Raiders is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET). The Bulldogs will celebrate "Military Appreciation Night" on Saturday (Jan. 7) with a special starting time of 4:05 p.m. (ET) slated for the finale.
