Billins & Motte Earn CCHA Honors This Week
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has tabbed two Ferris State University men's ice hockey student-athletes as league players of the week following an impressive sweep over nationally-ranked Miami (Ohio) this past weekend (Oct. 21-22) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Senior defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) was named the conference's Defenseman of the Week and freshman goaltender CJ Motte (St. Clair) earned Goaltender of the Week honors as announced by the league office on Monday (Oct. 24).
Billins tallied one assist last Friday (Oct. 21) in a 4-2 victory over the RedHawks and went on to notch two helpers in Saturday's (Oct. 22) 2-0 win, including the game-winning assist as the Bulldogs swept MU. Billins was also part of a Bulldog penalty kill unit that went eight-for-eight in the home series sweep.
This is the first time in the 2011-12 campaign Billins has been honored after twice receiving the weekly award last season. Billins is currently among the 20 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Motte saw action between the pipes in Saturday's game and posted his second-straight shutout of the season. On Saturday, Motte did not give up a goal while making 27 saves. He is currently the top NCAA Division I goaltender as he boasts a 3-0-0 record in 180 minutes of play. He has only allowed one power-play goal this campaign and holds an impressive .986 save percentage and a 0.33 goals against average. Motte has made 69 saves on the year.
This week represents Motte's first time receiving the league weekly honor after being tabbed as a conference notable performer each of the last two weeks.
The Bulldogs, under 20th-year head coach Bob Daniels, are currently unbeaten at 6-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play and are among the nation's top 10 teams in all three major college hockey polls this week.
FSU is off to its best start since winning eight consecutive contests in its second season of Division I collegiate hockey in 1979-80, which was the team's inaugural year in the CCHA.
FSU is currently listed sixth nationally this week in the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) NCAA Division I poll along with seventh in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and ninth in the Inside College Hockey.com (INCH) poll.
Ferris State will put its unbeaten mark on the line this week (Oct. 27-28) as the Bulldogs travel to Ann Arbor to square off against the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines in a battle of top 10 teams at Yost Ice Arena. Opening faceoff on both Thursday and Friday nights is slated for 7:35 p.m. (ET). Thursday's showdown will be televised live on Comcast.
