Big Rapids, Mich. - Senior defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) of the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been chosen as a candidate for the 2011-12 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in a recent announcement.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community, and competition.
The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in early February and those 10 individuals will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner during the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four in early April at Tampa, Fla.
Billins is serving as a co-captain of the Ferris State squad for the 2011-12 campaign.
Billins has played in 106 games for the Bulldogs. He has scored four power play goals, one short-handed goal and three game-winning goals, all contributing to a total of 10 goals in his career. He also has 28 assists in his career thus far for a total of 38 points entering his senior campaign.
In the 2010-11 campaign, Billins was selected twice as CCHA Defensemen of the Week. Last year, he registered a team second-most 53 blocked shots.
Billins and his Ferris State teammates will be opening the 2011-12 season this weekend (Oct. 7-8) with a two-game series against the St. Lawrence Saints. Friday's game will have a 7:05 p.m. (ET) start time, and Saturday's contest will begin at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
