Senior defenseman Zach Redmond (Traverse City) of the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been chosen as a candidate for the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in a recent announcement.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community, and competition.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 individuals will be placed on the official ballot.  Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community, and competition.

Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce Senior CLASS Award winner during the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four in early April at St. Paul, Minn.

Redmond, who's serving as Ferris State's captain for the 2010-11 campaign,  was recently named to Inside College's (INCH) 2010-11 Preseason All-America Third Team and also received first-team Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Preseason All-Conference accolades.

This season, Redmond has produced a team-best tying three points on two goals with an assist in four appearances.  The 6-2, 205-pound blueliner has recorded a plus four efficiency rating and a squad-most six blocked shots while tallying one game-winning goal for the campaign.

In 119 career contests to date, Redmond has accumulated 73 points on 17 goals with 56 assists. He also has nettted eight power-play lamplighters, one short-handed goal, five game-winning tallies, 182 blocked shots, and 14 multi-point games to go with a plus 23 efficiency rating.  The 2009-10 All-CCHA Second-Team honoree has etched his name among Ferris State's all-time top defensemen by currently ranking 12th in career assists, tied for 11th in points, and 12th in goals scored.

The Ferris State skater was drafted in the 2008 National Hockey League's (NHL) Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers with the 184th overall pick in the seventh round.

Redmond and Ferris State teammates begin CCHA play this weekend (Oct. 22-23) with a two-game home series against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big Rapids, Mich.  A 7:05 p.m. (EDT) start is slated for both contests at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena.
