Hockey Games At Alaska Rescheduled For This Saturday and Sunday
Let's play hockey!
The 2010-11 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will be doing just that this weekend (Feb. 5-6) despite mother nature's intervention as the Bulldogs' two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series versus the Alaska Nanooks has been adjusted due to this Tuesday's (Feb. 1) severe winter storm in the Midwest.
As a result, this weekend's series will take place this Saturday (Feb. 5) and Sunday (Feb. 6) due to travel delays for the Bulldogs. Both games will begin at 11:05 p.m. (EST) from UA's Carlson Center in Fairbanks. This weekend's series was originally slated for Friday-Saturday (Feb. 4-5) games before the blizzard forced a scheduling change as all air travel in the West Michigan area was halted.
Ferris State will travel on a bus to Chicago, Ill., early this Friday (Feb. 4) morning and depart from O'Hare International Airport on a mid-morning flight.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to depart from Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GFIA) in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday (Feb. 2) at 10 a.m. (EST) but was among the many flights which were cancelled due to the blizzard. Ferris State had traveled to Grand Rapids via a bus on Tuesday (Feb. 1) in lieu of the snow storm which created a reported 12.9 inches of snow at the GFIA and also forced the closing of several state universities, including Ferris State.
Following this Sunday's (Feb. 6) series finale, Ferris State will arrive back in Big Rapids sometime Monday (Feb. 7) evening.
The 5,678-mile roundtrip trek to Fairbanks, Alaska from Big Rapids, Michigan is never an easy one for travelers to make and Ferris State's travel to the last frontier this first weekend of February 2011 will certainly be unlike any of its previous trips.
Ferris State is currently has compiled a 12-12-4 overall record with a sixth-place 9-10-3-2 CCHA mark (32 points) while Alaska stands at 12-10-4 overall and has a fifth-place 9-9-4-2 ledger in the CCHA (33 points). Both teams are presently listed among others receiving votes in this week's (Jan. 31) U.S. College Hockey Online.com (USCHO) poll.
The upcoming home series against Alabama-Huntsville (Feb. 11-12) will go as originally scheduled with a 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoff scheduled for both Friday and Saturday night's contest at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
