The Ferris State University men's hockey team will put its current national 20th ranking on the line this weekend (Nov. 12-13) as the Bulldogs visit the Lake Superior State Lakers in a two-game set at LSSU's Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
The puck drops for both of this weekend's Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series contests at 7:05 p.m. (EST). Bulldog Hockey fans can tune into the broadcast of both games on 1460 AM and 107.7 FM with Dominic Hennig calling the action.
Ferris State, which is presently ranked 20th in the nation by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and Inside College Hockey.com this week (Nov. 8), has posted a 5-3-2 overall reocrd with a 2-2-2-2 CCHA mark to date this season. The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive home league series performance against nationally number-one ranked Miami (Ohio) this past weekend (Nov. 5-6) as FSU claimed a 3-2 win in the opener before prevailing 3-2 in a shootout following a 1-1 overtime tie in the finale.
The Bulldogs, who are coached by 19th-year head coach Bob Daniels, are ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense by allowing only 2.10 goals per game. Senior goaltender Pat Nagle has been one of Ferris' top performers this season and was selected as this week's (Nov. 8) CCHA Goaltender of the Week. The 2010-11 CCHA Preseason Second-Team pick currently ranks seventh among the national leaders in goals-against average (1.75), 13th in save percentage (.930), and tied for 16th in winning percentage (.667). Senior defenseman and team captain Zach Redmond (4-5=9) along with sophomore left wing Kyle Bonis (4-2=6), senior center Nate Hennig (4-2=6), and junior defenseman Chad Billins (2-4=6) are the Bulldogs' leading points producers this campaign to date.
Lake Superior State is presently 3-5-2 overall and 1-4-1-0 in the CCHA this season under sixth-year head coach Jim Roque. The Lakers are paced in scoring by senior forward Rick Schofield (4-8=12), who's tied for 41st place nationally in points per game (1.20), and sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (5-5=10). In net, senior Brian Mahoney-Wilson (1-4-1, 3.99 GAA, .874sv%) and freshman Kevin Kapalka (2-1-1, 2.99 GAA, .887sv%) have shared the goaltending duties. Current eighth-year assistant coach Tim Christian played collegiately at Ferris State from 1991-95 and was promoted to LSSU's top assistant position in 2008.
A season ago (Feb. 12-13), the two teams split a two-game set on the Lakers' home ice as Ferris State dropped a 4-3 decision in the opener before registering a 2-1 victory in the series' finale.
